Gambling bus

Bea Hemmingsen will sponsor a trip to the Black Oak Casino in the foothill town of Tuolumne.

Cost is $16 with a return of $10 cash (or $15 for those with coupons), and a discount on food.

The bus leaves at 8 a.m. Thursday from the parking lot next to the gun shop at 22 E. 11th St.

Democrats protest

Democrats will stage a protest outside a fundraiser attended by Tracy’s Republican Congressman Richard Pombo.

The rally will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Charter Way and Union Road in Stockton.

Tickets are available for the Tracy High Athletic Booster’s sixth annual Luau on Saturday at the Finney home.

Mexican-American Hall of Fame

Tickets for the Mexican-American Hall of Fame Award Ceremony are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Irene Castillo at 462-0682.

This year’s inductees are Dora L. Martinez for education; Judi Auwinger for community service; Carol Ornelas for business; Jessie Ornelas for women’s issues; and Mike Torres Sr. for fine arts.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Elkhorn Country Club, 1050 Elkhorn Drive, in Stockton.

JC oversight volunteers

The San Joaquin Delta Community College Board of Trustees seeks applicants from qualified people to fill three spots on its Citizens Oversight Committee.

The board will appoint a person to fill its “senior citizen,” “taxpayer” and “at-large” seats on the nine-member committee. The committee reviews how the college spends its $250 million bond, which was passed in 2004.

Committee members must be at least 18 years old, reside in the district and cannot be an employee, vendor, contractor or consultant with the district.

Applications are available at the college Web site, www.deltacollege.edu, and a meeting will be convened for those interested. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 7 at the college’s board room, 5151 Pacific Ave.

Applications must be sent before 5 p.m. Sept. 15, and appointments will be made Oct. 17.

Republicans meet

Republicans from southern San Joaquin County will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at Chez Shari Restaurant at the Manteca Park Golf Course, 305 N. Union Road.

The guest speaker will be Assembly candidate and Tracy Unified School Board trustee Gerry Machado.

Bible study

The Tracy Community Church will have a woman’s Bible study at 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and at 7 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Sept. 5 and 6. The theme for the first class is, “lives of integrity, words of prophesy.” It will be at the church at 1790 Sequoia Blvd.

Volunteers wanted

Tracy is looking for a few good volunteers to help at the Lolly Hansen Senior Center, 375 E. Ninth St.

The center serves about 400 people a week with a variety of programs and activities. At the moment, the center needs a receptionist who can answer phones and has clerical skills, and someone who can teach basic computer skills to seniors.
