As soon as he starts tonight's race at Altamont, Pleasanton's Jason Gilbert will lay claim to a points championship. Jason Gilbert of Pleasanton will officially claim the 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Western Late Model championship at Altamont Motorsports Park tonight. With a total of 1,808 points over 19 races, Gilbert is more than 200 points ahead of second-place Doff Cooksey of Brentwood going into the final race of the series today. Gilbert also has the points lead in the NASCAR California State standings, though Nick Joanides of Woodland Hills is still eligible to take that title. Cooksey, Justin Philpott of Tracy and Bobby Hodges of Carson City, Nev., are also in today’s event. The other three weekly Altamont divisions will be competing in their second to last events, with Sept. 20 marking the championship program for them. In the American Limited Stock Car division, Sammy Solari of Salida has won seven of the nine races, but has only a narrow lead over Richard Harper of Stockton. Todd Lynch of Tracy leads in the Grand American Modifieds over Riverbank’s Todd Lewis, but both are well ahead of the rest of the field. The Formula-4 division will run on the oval and on the 1.1-mile road course, and the Legends of the Pacific division, which runs half-scale cars that resemble vintage racers, will be back as well.
