A letter writer wants to wish California a Happy 158th Birthday.
EDITOR,
Happy Birthday, California (Sept. 9, 1850)! I believe all Californians need to be aware of the brief history, beauty and reality of this stunning state.
For years prior to 1846, American settlers in California (then called Alta California) had a hostile relationship with the Mexicans (Californios) and their government representatives. This sparked the beginning of the Mexican-American War in 1846.
In September 1849, the military governor set up a state government that operated until Congress made California America’s 31st state. Towns such as Monterey, Benicia (San Francisco), San Jose, Vallejo and, finally, Sacramento, served as capitals.
Every section of the world is special; however, there is no denying California’s beauty. You can go to majestic mountains, the shining sea, sandy deserts and an agriculture-filled Central Valley all on the same day.
Californians also are aware of the disappointing reality of wildfires, drought, earthquakes and illegal immigrants who sneak into the state and receive free medical and social services. Even with these benefits, some illegal immigrants continue to break the law by committing violent crimes, drug smuggling and driving under the influence, while they do not receive the same penalties Americans do.
Fields of golden poppies combined with the discovery of gold in 1848 undoubtedly gave California the nickname “Golden State,” decided in 1968. On Tuesday, I hope everyone in Tracy remembers that it was 158 years ago that the Golden State became part of the United States.

Liking your article alot, using it for my "trivia" games with my nurse pals. Thanks for correcting why I thought CA was called the "Golden State"... thought it was the rolling hills with golden grass blowing in the sunset... now I know better!
Thanks for the enthusiastic reminder of the state you are obviously so proud of, Lori Martin!
