Hannah, 10, and her partner, Soffia Metzler of Pleasanton, won first place in USA Gymnastics’ Acrobatic Gymnastics National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, at the end of July. With that win they became eligible to represent the U.S. at their sport’s world championship event in Scotland a month from now.
It will be the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique’s 21st Acrobatic World Championship and 5th International Age Group Competition, hosted by British Gymnastics at Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. British Gymnastics expects about 800 gymnasts from 22 countries at the event from Sept. 29 to Oct. 13.
Leslie Douglas, Hannah’s mother, said Hannah will leave on Sept. 25 and take three days to train before competition begins. In acrobatic gymnastics, there is no equipment or apparatus. Soffia acts as a base as Hannah does stunts in both tumbling routines, and balance routines. In addition to the first place finish in Iowa, Hanna and Soffia also competed in British Open Tournament last December and took the gold medal in the age 11-16 women’s pairs at international competition in Swidnica, Poland, back in May.
