The NASCAR Whelen All-American Western Late Models will have their next to last race of their 2008 season today at Altamont Motorsports Park.
Track leader Jason Gilbert of Pleasanton goes into the last two races with a strong lead over his closest challenger, Doff Cooksey of Brentwood. Gilbert has nine wins in 18 starts, including last week’s win when Tracy’s Justin Philpott came in first but was disqualified when track officials ruled that he had a modified suspension.
Gilbert is also the NASCAR Whelen All-American state points leader, and is ranked ninth in the U.S. in the Whelen All-Americans.
Today, the Western Late Models will run 100 laps on the half-mile oval. The last WLM race in the 20-race series at Altamont will be Sept. 6.
Also today is the fifth race in the Flashco SRL (StockCar Racing League) Southwest Tour. With two more races to go, Jim Pettit is the points leader with Craig Raudman close behind. Both won the preview series races at Altamont on May 24 and July 5. Entries also include Tracy’s Rick Ruzbarsky in his No. 51 Mid-Valley Irons and Metals Chevrolet.
They will also race for 100 laps on the half-mile oval. Also racing will be the American Limited Stock Cars, Future Champions Development Series and Formula 4’s.
