A local rock band hopes to make a big impression with a major record label.

Twenty-two-year-old Isaac Gonzales had a hunch that his band might come upon some luck sometime in the near future. He doesn’t want to jinx anything, but a meeting with a representative from a major record label might lead to record deal.

"I told myself over a year and a half ago when we started that if we stay on track, we’ll catch a break and get lucky," said Gozales, lead vocalist. "And now we have a meeting with a guy from Warner Bros. after we record some new songs."

Gonzales, bassist Billy Bozeck, 21; guitarist Travis Cassell, 19; and drummer Mike Quigg, 19, all Tracy High School graduates, make up the pop-punk band Speechless Story. Cousins Cassell and Bozeck formed the band, which began playing gigs in and around the city more than a year ago. They recently began recording four new tracks after receiving word from someone that an A&R scout from Warner Bros. was interested in hearing some fresh songs from the group.

Recording commenced at Modesto Sound, a recording studio that offers an hourly discount rate to musicians younger than 20.

"We’re pretty psyched about it," Gonzales said. "We’re crossing our fingers that this will be the break we need."

The band draws upon Blink 182, Panic at the Disco and Fallout Boy, and they have a small following in the local scene as well as on MySpace.

"We’ve been seeing a lot more people out there at our shows," said Cassell, who has been playing guitar for 11 years. "And we’ve been getting more and more hits on MySpace."

The band started playing at friends’ houses and began playing gigs at Tracy Billiards on 11th Street before branching out to Modesto, Manteca, Stockton and Livermore.

"We want to record a full-length CD and go on tour," said Quigg, who is majoring in jazz performance at San Joaquin Delta College.

Quigg received his first drum set at age 8 and loves pounding out beats.

"Drums are the pulse and rhythm of music," he said. "They’re the backbone of all music and are the oldest instruments."

His true passion is jazz, but he says he has lots of fun playing in Speechless Story.

The band members are all good friends and have formed a tight bond.

"We all get along really well, and we’re pretty serious about staying within our genre of music," Cassell said. "We want to make it big, and we’ll do anything possible to make that happen."
