Works by master Surrrealists Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro will be on display in a high-profile Grand Theatre art exhibit next month.

Arts
This painting by Salvador Dali will be shown at the Grand in September in a Surrealism exhibit.
Paintings by Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali have been pegged to open the 2008-09 exhibition season at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

"Salute to Surrealism" will feature the work of Joan Miro as well as Picasso and Dali in an exhibit that starts Sept. 6, the opening day of the Tracy Bean Festival. It ends Oct. 18.

A special "gallery talk and reception" with curator James Cloer will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 27. The event is free. Surrealism was philosophical, cultural and artistic movement that spread across Europe and the globe in the aftermath of World War I.

Dali is one of its most famous artistic practitioners, and his paintings of melting clocks came to symbolize the genre.

The exhibit coincides with another by four acclaimed contemporary artists: Julia d'Arcy, whose graphite drawings echo Surrealism; Ed Gafford, an artist who uses a high-powered camera and microscope; Nils Krueger, a sculptor who uses steel; and fine art photographer Asa Mathat.

Oooooo, now this is nice. I just caught Dali's Last Supper in that weird little anteroom near the stairs at the National Gallery. Rauschenberger (RIP) was what I went to see, but found some new stuff, too. Dali is always fun. For contrast get to SFMOMA for the Frida Kahlo...

Makes me think of "Adam meets Eve?" in Dali's version? His version of the Genesis?

Surrealists have often sought to link their efforts with political ideals and activities. In the Declaration of January 27, 1925, for example, members of the Paris-based Bureau of Surrealist Research (including André Breton, Louis Aragon, and, Antonin Artaud, as well as some two dozen others) declared their affinity for revolutionary politics. While this was initially a somewhat vague formulation, by the 1930s many Surrealists had strongly identified themselves with communism

Steve Reshakis,

Kind of like the folk singers of the 60's and 70's huh? Although their brand of music was easy to listen to, much better (in my opinion) than the rap being played and sold today. Too much anger in today's music. Would rather listen to Rachmaninoff.

Oh well, just wanted to say...one man's music is another man's crap.

Have a nice day.

Some argue, "art may be the biggest con of all time!"
Try telling that to the Nazis.

I'll leave you with this half eaten cheese sandwhich.
