A piece of underground equipment that gave out triggered a power failure that affected 2,088 PG&E customers, including the senior center 'cooling station.'

A power failure knocked out electricity for a little more than an hour this afternoon to 2,088 Pacific Gas and Electric customers, including the Lolly Hansen Senior Center, which was being used as an air-conditioned haven for seniors to escape 100-degree heat.

There were only a couple of seniors at the center when power went out at about 3 p.m. p.m., and they were moved to an air-conditioned room in City Hall, said Rod Buchanan, interim head of the parks department. They returned when power was restored.

A piece of underground equipment gave out and sparked the shutdown, said Jeff Smith, a PG&E spokesman. Power was returned by 4:15 p.m., he said.
