Another
wave of hot temperatures is expected to hit Tracy in the coming days. After reviewing the
forecast, the city will again turn the air-conditioned Lolly Hansen
Senior Center
into a designated “cooling center” for residents beginning Thursday.
Once
activated, the senior center, at 375
E. Ninth St., will run from 8:30 a.m. until 10
p.m.
“We
usually average about four to five folks a day,” city spokesman Matt Robinson
said. “It’s not extravagant; it’s just a place to stay cool and wait for the
city to cool down as well as your house.”
The
cooling center is free. Pets, except guide dogs, are not allowed. Tracy firefighters stop
by to check on the public at the center to make sure no one is suffering from a
heat-related illness.
So
far, the center has not had any medical issues since it’s been open. It is
predicted to stay open through the weekend based on the upcoming forecast.
Whenever
the temperature is predicted to reach 100 degrees for two consecutive days,
based on an average of four separate weather forecasts, the fire department will
convert the senior center into a cooling center for all residents.
This
will be the fourth time since May that the department has activated the cooling
center.
