Another wave of hot temperatures is expected to hit Tracy in the coming days. After reviewing the forecast, the city will again turn the air-conditioned Lolly Hansen Senior Center into a designated “cooling center” for residents beginning Thursday.

Once activated, the senior center, at 375 E. Ninth St., will run from 8:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.

“We usually average about four to five folks a day,” city spokesman Matt Robinson said. “It’s not extravagant; it’s just a place to stay cool and wait for the city to cool down as well as your house.”

The cooling center is free. Pets, except guide dogs, are not allowed. Tracy firefighters stop by to check on the public at the center to make sure no one is suffering from a heat-related illness.

So far, the center has not had any medical issues since it’s been open. It is predicted to stay open through the weekend based on the upcoming forecast.

Whenever the temperature is predicted to reach 100 degrees for two consecutive days, based on an average of four separate weather forecasts, the fire department will convert the senior center into a cooling center for all residents.

This will be the fourth time since May that the department has activated the cooling center.

For information: 831-4230.

I wonder if children and grandchildren are also invited during this hot period of time? After all, hot is hot no matter what your age is and they are "residents" are they not?

Messing with you right back. smilies/wink.gif

Dave,

Yes, I think ALL residents are welcome during the heat spells. If they average only 4-5 people a day, is it cost productive to have the A/C on the entire day? Just asking. I know the 4-5 who use the facility because they possibly don't have A/C appreciate it.

Somehow I knew you'd be here to read my first comment. smilies/cool.gif

It's only because I normally start my work day very early in the AM.

Yes, I know it's available to all residents and am very pleased our city offeres this type of service to those who have no other alternative than to sweat it out. Thankfully we don't have high humidity to go along with high heat or people would be dropping all over the place.

Everyone, if you know of someone who does not have a place to cool down please tell them about the Senior Center. It very well could save their lives.

Hey, perhaps we could get up a scratch BINGO game with the kids pulling the numbers and assisting the seniors with their bingo cards. What do ya think? smilies/smiley.gif
