Tracy United to host boys tournament

Plasencia Fields and the Tracy Sports Complex will host about three-dozen soccer teams this weekend as Tracy United Competetive Soccer Club hosts its 14th annual Tracy Summer Classic tournament, also known as the Scott Wilharm Memorial.

So far, 37 boys teams, from under-11 to under-16, have signed up to participate. They include four teams from Tracy: the under-11 Division 1 Tracy United Crossfire, under-12 Division 1 Tracy United Quakes, under-14 Division 1 Tracy United Gladiators, and the under-14 Division 3 Tracy United Chaos.

“We are excited about this tournament. Last year it was very competitive,” Jose Torres, coach of the Gladiators, said Tuesday.

His team was the under-13 division champion in the tournament last year and took second place two years ago, but the guest teams made them work for last year’s title.

“Our team has improved a lot, and the level of competition makes this a tournament for all of the teams to look at,” he said.

Most games will be at Plasencia Fields, with under-15 and under-14 games at the Sports Complex on Saturday, and under-16 games at the Sports Complex on Sunday. Championship games for the under-14 and under-13 games Sunday will also be at the Sports Complex.

It will be the second-to-last weekend in the California Youth Soccer Association 2007-08 season, with final games to be played Aug. 23 and 24. Tracy United hosted the local girls tournament two weeks ago, with 47 teams at the invitational tournament Aug. 2 and 3.
