Though nearly 60 new teachers are new to Tracy Unified School District, many key positions remain unfilled.

Fifty-eight new teachers started work since late July at Tracy Unified School District schools and 15 more positions remain open.

It’s slightly more than the usual number of annual hires, according to the district. But even with the new teachers on board, there are still more openings since 31 retirees left Tracy schools a few months ago to take advantage of a benefits packages the district said it would cut back beginning this school year.

The district still seeks applicants to permanently replace former Superintendent of Human Resources James Mousalimas, who this spring took a job with the San Joaquin County Department of Education. Ray Strong, a retired TUSD employee, will fill in until a permanent replacement is found.

New principals for Kelly and McKinley elementary schools are also needed.

The 12,000-student district pays teachers a starting salary between $42,400 and $43,975, according Roxanne Ocampo, who hires teachers for the district.

Principals get anywhere from the mid-$90,000s to $110,000 to start.

Math and science teachers are in high demand, according to the district human resources department, as are teachers with multiple credentials.

Already this summer, West and Tracy high schools hired new principals and a new director for the Tracy Learning Center Adult School. Tracy High also hired a new assistant principal.

Since early this year, talk of drastic state budget cuts and the toll they’d take on education spending prompted dozens of Northern California school districts to lay off hundreds of teachers.

So the pool of applicants this year is especially broad, school officials said.
