A body is found in the San Joaquin River two days after a 15-year-old boy disappeared near Kasson Road.
San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies found a body in the San Joaquin River on Tuesday afternoon, though it has yet to be officially identified as the body of a 15-year-old boy who disappeared in the river near Kasson Road on Sunday.
A newspaper reported that relatives identified the missing boy as Danny Yanez of Oakland.
The boy, who was wading nearly halfway out in the river when the water level was low, went under at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday, according to sheriff’s spokesman Les Garcia. The teen did not know how to swim.
A news report said nearly 80 of his friends and relatives tried to help search crews in boats and a helicopter find the body on Monday, but the search was called off because of darkness.
More than 40 friends and relatives returned to the scene Tuesday, said sheriff’s spokesman Dave Konecny, when the body surfaced mid-afternoon.
Swift currents and unseen dangers underwater can make the seemingly benign river treacherous, and those taking to the water are encouraged to always wear a lifejacket.
