Iraq's succeeds despite Democrats Print E-mail
Written by Steve Wampler
Tuesday, 05 August 2008

The Iraq war is won, even if congressional Democrats consistently fought against our efforts in the region.

If Rep. Jerry McNerney, Sen. Barack Obama and most congressional Democrats had had their way in early 2007, Iraq today would likely be fraught with civil war, riddled by genocide and probably a haven for al-Qaida terrorists.

Amazingly, Obama even has had the inhumanity to suggest that preventing genocide wasn’t a good enough reason to keep our troops in Iraq. In July, Obama said in a bizarre statement that even knowing that the surge has been a success — drastically reducing violence and giving Iraq a chance for a bright future — he still would have opposed the surge.

In 2006, Obama told Americans that "Democracy is just a dream for Iraq, and the surge will not work."

McNerney, Obama and other Democrats opposed the surge, opposed victory, opposed giving help to the Iraqi people and opposed preventing Iraq from becoming a haven for al-Qaida terrorists.

Thankfully, President Bush, Sen. John McCain and our military saw a different course — victory for Iraq and America, and defeat for the terrorists.

On Feb. 16, 2007, as our troops headed to battle in Iraq, McNerney was back home in Washington, D.C., voting to undermine their efforts, publicly disapproving of the surge.

On five separate occasions, McNerney voted to withdraw our troops from Iraq, regardless of whether there was progress and despite whether the move would lead to regional chaos and instability.

Even this summer, as victory in Iraq had started to appear, McNerney and Obama were unable to face reality. In a June 1 editorial, the liberal Washington Post — with a headline of "Don’t look now, but the U.S.-backed government and army may be winning the war" — warned Obama to develop a plan for success in Iraq. The Post also should have warned McNerney.

Eighteen days later, McNerney voted to deny our troops in the field weapons and ammunition; combat vehicles, including armored vehicles for force protection; and defense health programs, particularly for psychological health and traumatic brain injury.

Every day, as victory rears its head, McNerney, Obama and most Democrats look more foolish and out of touch as they continue to deny the effectiveness of the surge and the success of our soldiers.

Michael Yon, who has spent more time in Iraq than any other reporter and is probably the best war reporter of this generation, observed in mid-July, "The Iraq war is over. We won. Which means the Iraqi people won."

On July 6, the Sunday Times of London called Iraq "one of the most spectacular victories of the war on terror."

So many al-Qaida leaders have been captured or killed that U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker, renowned for his cautious assessments, has said that the terrorists have "never been closer to defeat than they are now."

And although the American people are getting eight times less news about Iraq this year than they received in 2007 (anyone wonder why?), more than half of American voters (51 percent) believe the U.S. and its allies are winning the war on terror, Rasmussen Reports noted in July.

The Simon Fraser University Human Security Brief records that because of "the humiliating recent defeats experienced by al-Qaida in Iraq," popular support in the Islamic world for the perpetrators of 9/11 has fallen precipitously. For example, in Pakistan (where al-Qaida is arguably most deeply entrenched), "support for Osama bin Ladin has dropped from 70 percent in August 2007 to 4 percent in January 2008."

In Iraq, attacks are at their lowest level in four years. Civilian deaths are down by nearly 90 percent since the surge began. High-profile explosions are down by 80 percent in the same period. American and Iraqi soldiers suffer far fewer casualties than they have for years. Sectarian deaths from Iraq’s near civil-war plunged all the way down to zero in May and June 2008.

When one looks at our recent successes in Iraq, it’s hard not to wonder who is the most despondent over these developments — our terrorist enemies or congressional Democrats such as McNerney and Obama, who did almost everything imaginable to impose defeat and still can’t face reality.

To whom it may concern:
Isn't it funny when you don't need to read something someone wrote when you see their picture. Well here is again preaching about the war, and putting the blame on someone else. I agree the democrats failed to go after the real murderers.

I have also heard for the last 5 years about the Mission Accomplished, the surge, and how well the war is going. I'm very upset with a few Republicans who continue try to make us believe the war has helped fight terrorism in the world.

Especially in America, people are losing their homes their jobs, and even families over the conflict. The terrorism is here on the streets of America.
Just because Wampler is a operative for the Republican Dean Andal he gets all over Mc Nerney and says it partly his fault, excuse me he has only been in office for less tha two years.

I think if you ask Richard Pombo he would tell you that Jerry is now carrying the ball the rest of the way. Lets get back to American values and end this war and see if we can help save America.

Steve Wampler tell your panel of a few Republicans, that the American people deserve more. That way we can get more Republicans elected, because people are scared of what the administration has been doing.

Republican.

Great column Steve.
The left wing, Bush hating group is sure gonna be ticked! They always are when presented with the truth, even though they ignore the facts and reality. They always seem to find, and they love to quote, some left wing blog or website that is dedicated to feeding them with their desired result.
McNerney and Obama should be held liable for their votes, but with their fingers in the wind and always changing their positions, they play on the disgust some of the folk, who never study the subjects, have for the successful in society. Class warfare and class warfare blinds them. They are easy targets for the Democrats.
This is why Obama has a big push in Republican States to get out the vote of the unemployed, the undereducated along with the poor. He and his handlers know they are easy targets for their line of class warfare. They prey upon the unhappiness and envy in others.
Keep it up, Steve! Thanks again for the great letter,
Tim Michael Case

Great letter, Steve. Now I want to air out some issues with my out look of OBAMA. The more I read and hear of OBAMA I start getting ill. Obama is riding on the coatails of "the 60's movement" of the old, but it is the same old attitude of HELL NO WE WONT GO. But what is worse he is a flip flopper doing and saying ANY DAM THING JUST TO GET INTO OFFICE. This s.owe.b is selfish. He can afford a large margin of error due to the radicals who are supporting him and not to mention the power of the media. They want him in way too much.

What Ills me about him, I look at McCain and Obama are trying to get hired to do a job to be serving me, in other words, I am the emplyer and they are selling themselves to get the job. The more I read Obamas resume the more I scratch my head thinking , 'is this guy seriouse'? Then I do what most employers do, I do a backgrounds check, with OBAMA I have found this guy is as dirty as a shirt straight from a cat-house. I am offended and amazed this guy who has ties to a Reverand (Wright) who has been his pastor for 20 years that preaches racist and anti-american hate. I am offended that OBAMA has ties to a 70's terrorist that was on a FBI's most wanted list, Bill Ayers. I am offended that OBAMA's reveran also traveled to LYBIA with Luis Fahrican who id THE BIGGEST RACIST of them all. And Obama continues to insult me on a daily basis and the far left has so much control on the rest of the dems that it isn't funny. Michelle Obama who thinks this is a very terrable country and has never been proud of her country. I just do not get it. Where have our HERO's in the world gone?

Steve,
Iraq is won! Afghanistan is free! Let's bring the troops home now! Oh that's right, we can't. Afghanistan is currently a mess since we've neglected it for our adventure in Iraq. Oh, and the only reason there is a tenuous calm in Iraq right now is because Al Sadr has decided to keep quiet for the time being. And how about that $80 billion surplus Iraq is running while we suffer here at home. Mismanagement by Bush? No, it's the Dems' fault.

Odell,
The current president lowered the bar for lack of qualifications to hold the office of president. Not only that, but the Republican establishment has made it cool to be simple and ignorant. Personally, I'd like this country to attempt to raise the bar for our elected officials and the political discourse, not lower it. It's too bad you think Obama is insulting you, because the truth is, it's McCain and Bush that are insulting you on a daily basis. They're taking advantage of your loyalty, but you can't even recognize it. Anybody, Odell, Steve, Tim, define victory in the war on terror and how we'll achieve it realistically. Meanwhile, keep drinking the koolaid, it's why we're in this position.

(Steven) I have a different take on your article, 'The Iraq war is won, even if congressional Democrats consistently fought against our efforts in the region.'
"The surge has beeen a success": No where in your article did you mention (then) Colin Powell's demands to (then) Def. Sec. Rumsfeld, that from the very beginning, American forces had been under-sized, under-equipped?
No recognition to the residents and their "chieftan's" of Anwar Province; Who decidely took a deliberate stance to fight against al-Qaida and their insurgency which by today's standards makes Baghdad and the "Green Zone" look relatively peaceful.
Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki own articulation that he wants a timetable (not a "horizon")for the withdrawl of American troops.

The Iraq's have a government which is up and running.
The notion is they claim to now have a sufficient counter-insurgent forces.
And little by little oil exports are loosening.

So what are we still doing there - if this the case - despite the Democrats?

Sweet! Sort of like the pot calling the kettle black. Tom, I suggest you look up the meaning of the word RINO before you start spewing your hate against people like Steve.

Steve

A refreshing article and one that isn't going to be well accepted by party line, single lever pulling Democrats and people who really don’t want to know anyway and simply hold grudges from the past.

All

Yes we should probably have a better President and Congress. But we nominate them and vote for them so it becomes one of choosing the lesser of two evils in the ballot box.

Empty rhetoric or proven results, it's all up to you to decide. But I have always had more success with my projects when they are planned and not something just off the cuff because it may sound good to a number of people who are not really paying any attention to the matter at all.

Free Kool-aid, get yer ice cold Free Kool-aide. Don't ask me where it comes from, what's in it, or how it was made or who paid for it because you really could care less as long as it's free and sounds appetizing.

Hey, uhm, what about that whole Anbar Awakening deal, where the military was literally paying Sunni militant groups to fight on our side? And didn't those payments recently stop? How many of those fighters will the Iraqi government step in and employ, and what happens to the ones that the Iraqi government doesn't hire? Call me crazy, but I have to think that cold hard cash makes a much bigger difference than troops that most of the population in Iraq don't want there in the first place.

The qualifications needed for the office of the president today:

insert a cigar in your intern's various... orally sample same, rate quality
lie under oath
get intern to lie under oath
lie to the electorate

Not only that, but the Republican establishment has made it cool to be simple and ignorant.

Here are the facts; 9/11 was in the works BEFORE Bush became president, we have not been attacked since. Bush did not approve a bunch of 520 credit score people for loans they could not afford. Bush did not point a gun at anyones head to force them to sign the loan docs. He inherited a bubble economy from Clinton/Gore that was built on air and was already going backwards. All politicians are beholden to someone. The Democratic congress has done nothing. Nancy Pelosi is a danger to this country just as Tom Dashel was. Obama is the Pied Piper and anyone that votes for him is delusional. Sorry, those last two were just opinions.
I will say again, I am not jumping up and down for McCain but Obama is the scariest man I can remember, next to Al Gore, running for leader of the free world. BUYER BEWARE!!!!
And by the way, at least Bush and the Republicans had the balls to go kick some terrorist ass. Yea I know, it's our brave troops that are spilling their blood but if Gore was president at the time of 9/11, I truly believe he would have rolled over and we would have been hit again. Jealous of you? No Tom, I actually pitty you. You have some good ideas but you don't know how to win people to your side.

Richard isn't going to call me and tell me to shut my mouth either. I know the character of the man too well to believe he would do something like that.

Oh, and when we were at El Castillo a few weeks ago, you as well could have walked over to meet with us. So perhaps you should have taken that opertunity to be a good leader and a good man.

You still dish it out but you can't take it when others turn the tables on you and feed you your own style of dealing with people.

Yes, you are absolutely 100% correct, people are watching. I hear from many of them every day and they all feel sorry for you that you just don't get it. That's a shame.

And yes, I am a fool and I completely admit it. I am a fool because I repeatedly try to reason with a fool and that does no one any good.

Good evening Tom, I am sure you will have more to say on all the subjects that no one really cares to hear anymore. I know I certainly don't because you really have nothing of value to add to any of the conversations. At 72 years old I would have thought by now you could have better mastered your social skills. Didn't we win the war in Iraq back in 2003?
President George W.Bush "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed." —speaking underneath a "Mission Accomplished" banner aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, May 1, 2003
So what are we talking about "we won" now?
So why is it that since we won back in 2003, and the president declared our victory we are talking about a win in 2008. Five years have past since we "won". Why aren't the troops back? Five years later.... Why isn't are gas cheaper? Don't we get a cut from the "war profits" for the taxes that we spent for this "war"?

Have you ever heard this before?

President George W. Bush "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." —Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

Nah... did you hear this?

7/22/08 Obama-unedited transcript from Aman, Jordan

OBAMA: Uh, uh, are, uh, uh, uh, um. That’s — that’s a bunch — so — so let me tick these off. Deh... Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, um, uh. So the issue is not a perception that, uh... Steve,
Didn't we win the war in Iraq back in 2003?
President George W.Bush "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed." —speaking underneath a "Mission Accomplished" banner aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, May 1, 2003
So what are we talking about "we won" now? Five years later.

Steve, does it make you feel more powerful and masculine when you make condescending remarks and label women? I am sure you want to smack mein the mouth and tell me to "shut up" and "lick your boots" right? Why don't you show how much of a "real man" you are by debating the issues and respect me and not "label" me to put me in my place like the male chauvinists have been doing to their women all throughout history. After all it was "pinko" women who had to fight for women's right to vote and have social equality in America.

Steve, remember you were born from a mother also. For a man who claims that he understands what "human life" is it is amazing that you advocate killing. I am a mother and I have children and I am against killing "innocent children". I hve strong sympathy for the mothers who havelost their sons and daughters to the war. Whether it be the mothers of the soldiers who have died in this war or the Iraqi mothers who did not have anything to do with politics who's children have died in the war. I don't think Steve that you "know"
how a mother feels when she loses a child. If you did, you wouldn't be such an advocate of killing and you would be advocating preventing further deaths from happening rather than
advocating for "more deaths". What's the matter with you Steve?

Way off and condescending and sarcstic. I never posted anything to you Dale so why the sarcasm and the translation?I never stated that one couldn't offer thier view. That's your translation.

Steve, do you know how a mother feels and what she goes through
while she is carrying her child? Do you know the psychological bond that a child develops with the mother during pregnancy? Do you know what a mother goes through when she has labor pains to have a child or are you here to minimize and compare the father's experience like it is the same with your "I don't think Steve margy that you "know" how a mother father feels when she loses a child." Stop minimizing mother's experience of pregnancy and childbirth!

Margie, you think too highly of yourself...

My "Pinko" comment is not even close to "Chauvinist"
I call all Leftist Socialists "Pinkos" regardless of Gender.
You are a Nevil Chamberlin Pacivist...you are a "PINKO" with or without a Dress.

You want to debate? ok, lets take your 2 worst points....

you said that Bush said "major combat operations have ended"
and imply I am Wrong to say the war is Won? when Bush said that he was refering to the Quick and decisive CRUSHING Victory over saddam's Great ARMY. Game Set Point...He was right on. then came the Battles with all the other Scumbags over there. The AlQuedas who kept flowing in from IRAN...we have now beaten them. this part of the War was more Focused street fighting and did not involve Stealth Bombers and Major artillary etc. but was more carefully and surgical in nature. You piddly attempt to connect the 2 shows your total lack of Understanding of the War and in fact any other War ( some Dean you are of anything)
second screwed up point you make wrongly,..

2nd point Margie gets wrong....
You and all Women are not the "defacto" "Voice of Parental Wisdom"
I am a Man, I am a father, I Have a Son who I love and care for as Much as His Mother, you as a woman Have no special "extra credit"
because you carried the Child...thats "feminazi psycobabble"
( also another sign you are a "PINKO" )

and I dont hit Women..especially sniveling thin-skinned ones like You who can't participate in a "Blood-sport" like Political Bloggs without crying.

Toughen up Margy...stop whining...or go sit in the corner with Tom.

Dale,

I think you like to minimize a woman's experience of pregnancy and childbirth because you believe it is insignificant and do not really know what the experience is. Furthermore, I think that you believe that woman should shut up and get in the kitchen barefoot and raise kids and not be involved in the political processes so that men can keep them in control. I also think that you're the type that believes that women should not be in positions of "decision making" in society in politics or heads of companies because it would disrupt the male hierarchy and dominance.

heres an example of why it is completely legitimate for President Bush to say "Mission Accomplished" and to say "Major Combat is over"

We had a small group of tanks approaching a huge Tank Group of Saddam's Republican Guard Our Guys were outnumbered 7 to 1..it was night and we haden't even made visual contact yet, but our sophisticated technology had already spotted the Iraqi tanks. The American Officer in charge ordered a full on assault using computer controlled firing instructions, and we wiped out the entire Iraqi Tank group without them even able to see us let alone get a shot off in our direction.
the WAR with Saddam was one of the shortest in the History of combat
so "Mission accomplished was in fact accurate, ( only a Tracy/Stockton PINKO idiot would read it another way.)

Certainly you make yours "crystal."
Now, John Ratzenberger AKA "Cliff Clavern, from Cheers" tried to sell (packaged) seaweed as an alternate to styrafoam packaging ("I know, HA-HA-HA") as a bio-degradable product -once it hit the land fills.
I get it!
However, one might also notice where his profit margin fell (if there was any) - (and I'll bet a bundle from 'Cheers') went directly to?
His waistline.
Trust me, that has not been the case for me.
I support our troops, having had one son just return, at this point, I just don't happen to agree -OK.
Foregive my irrverence and reflections to anything from the Rock-n-Roll era of the 60's and 70's.
In many ways I AGREE, Bring-em on, let's just kill-em all right now! And get-it-over-with. I don't want my kid's looking over their shoulders twenty years from now, saying, "well I guess we (our elected politicans) should have done this or that."
E.g. Korea, Vietnam, "War-on Terror," S. America, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Darfur, etc., but it's still a war, none-the-less.

Remember because of "chauvinism","sexism" and "masogyny" in America, so-called PINKOS women had to fight for their rights in America. Chauvinist men did not fight for women's rights to vote or have a voice or status in America!

Poor troops, must be feeling battle fatigue and in fear for their lives every day while there to ensure our freedom. I don't like the war at all, but allowing events to point to where we would be vulnerable to slaughter would be dangerous? I think so.d

The problem we see today is much greater today on the war agenda was due to the fact someone dropped the ball in not going after Osama Bin Laden during the Clinton Administration. Remember Somalia?

Should we empower the terrorists by giving them too much leeway, what kind of protection will our future children or children have.. if peace is not secured? Their extremist faith allows no mercy for their enemies.

Right now, I am concerned about China and Sudan, their "cozy" relationship due to the fact China needs their oil and Sudan needs their weapons?

Just not feeling secure with either candidate for President of USA.
Go Global, or continue the war? If not Iran... Escalate in Afghanistan? Just how much of secure footing do we have to ensure peace for our Americans? Don't know, but the world is getting tired of our soil being spared of having "war" staged here. That is not a comfortable feeling for me to be aware of.

Thanks to the Troops for keeping it off our soil. Lives lost there will never be brought back, let's honor their memory of their dedication and loyalty to our country. I don't think they would want to return to a divided country that they fought to ensure unity in USA?

Future will tell, if the choice was correct in the electing either president of the choice. Good luck everybody.
