Tracy police officers used Craigslist.org to lure four women, one by one, to a foreclosed home, where they were arrested on suspicion of prostitution.
Homeowners agreed to allow police to stage the sting at this Tahoe Circle home. Glenn Moore/Tracy Press Police arrested four women on suspicion of prostitution
after luring them to a west Tracy home late Wednesday through early this
morning.
The women had posted online ads offering sex in the “casual
encounters” section of a popular classifieds Website. Police responded to the
personals, offering money in exchange for sex and asking to meet them late
Wednesday night at a Tahoe Circle home.
Police arranged to have the women show up one by one.
Four came: Janel Manthei, 26; Brandi Arwood, 20; Lizette
Rubio, 24; and Saprina Allen, 23. Each was arrested on suspicion of
prostitution for allegedly agreeing to have sex for money.
The women drove from various cities in San Joaquin County
and the East Bay.
By law, it’s illegal to accept or offer sex for money, drugs
or anything of material value, according to the state penal code.
Cops asked the homeowners if they could use the two-story
tract home for the sting.
The homeowners moved out two weeks ago and are close to
losing the home to foreclosure anyway, so they agreed.
Tracy police use empty homes, typically foreclosures, to
meet up with people who snag the bait, Deputy Chief Rick Golphin said.
“We try to use places where they’d normally go,” he said.
“If we asked them to come to a hotel or something, they’re used to that. They’d
know.”
Neighbors said the sting was quiet and nobody knew what was
going on that night.
Next-door neighbor Steve Palefsky watched the event unfold
from his yard and said he noticed that someone had hung sheets over the windows
at the back of the house.
“I didn’t know what was happening,” he said today. “There
were just a bunch of people making phone calls.”
Golphin said Tracy police plan to conduct similar stings in
the future and at some point target the customers, too. He said it’s nothing
new, and that police have caught many alleged prostitutes in the past through
late-night meet-ups like the one this week.
