A crash knocks Tracy racer Justin Philpott out of a Saturday contest at Altamont Motorsports Park. Jason Gilbert of Pleasanton took the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Western Late Models 100-lap feature on Altamont Motorsports Park’s sponsor appreciation day this past Saturday and kept his spot as points leader. Sammy Solari of Salida took his fifth victory of the season in the American Limited Stock Car division, and Robert Kennedy of San Francisco won the Grand American Modified feature. Tyler Thomas of Penryn took the Future Championship Development Series victory, and Jake Morgenstern and Richard Hull shared victories in Formula-4. Tim Spurgeon of Danville led the Whelen race’s opening laps against the 27-car starting grid and Carson City, Nev., teenager Bobby Hodges took the lead on lap nine off turn four. A caution flag followed quickly when 2007 Track Champion Justin Philpott of Tracy hit the wall on the backstretch and 2007 Rookie of the Year Doff Cooksey was forced into the dirt. Following the crash, Cooksey was able to continue with only minor damage, but Philpott and Manteca’s David Hulsey were eliminated. On a Lap 90 restart, Gilbert overtook Manteca’s Guy Guibor, who had led for nearly 77 laps. Altamont will not host an event Saturday evening, but racing will be back Aug. 9 with the United States Auto Club Sprints, Midgets and Ford Focus Midgets. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Western Late Models will also compete in two 50-lap main events on the half-mile paved oval. • Information provided by Steve Blakesley, Altamont Raceway.
