Ridiculous remedy for high gas prices Print E-mail
Written by Mary Park / For the Tracy Press

Our Democratic congressman's refusal to drill for domestic oil cripples the country, a local woman says.

EDITOR,

Rep. Jerry McNerney has suggested America could fight high gasoline prices by releasing oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve with its 727 million barrel capacity. That’s ridiculous.

Not only is that poor public policy, using emergency supplies for normal operations, but it is like feeding bread crumbs to a starving man. It’s not the answer.

Noting that the Outer Continental Shelf contains, conservatively, an estimated 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, the July 15 Wall Street Journal called easing access to the shelf “one of the few responsible long-term remedies.”

But here’s the problem, McNerney opposes deep-sea oil drilling, opposes drilling in northern Alaska and opposes other steps to produce more American oil. Sadly, America is the only developed nation in the world that restricts access to its own offshore energy resources.

The Gallup polling organization recently found that only 14 percent of Americans approve of Congress’ performance — the lowest rating in Gallup’s 34-year history of such polling. It’s no wonder when we have a congressman like McNerney, who cares more for his radical environmental friends than for the people of the 11th Congressional District.

Right on the money Mary. Someone needs to tell Jerry that we need the SPR in reserve for emergency use. For instance, if Israel hits Iran's nuke sites,( with U.S. help), we might need the SPR.

i bet those that are against tapping resources on American soil would re-think their stance if they actually had to pay for energy on the same wages the rest of us do. i just got a polling person calling tonight asking alot of questions and a few were about McNerney and i had to say undecided or unknown on alot of stuff, but now that i know hes against tapping our own resources ill be voting against him.

All this country has to do is threaten to drill off-shore oil sites and the Middle East will lower the price per barrel the same day we announce it. Think that's funny? That just happened a few days ago.

Now that the price of gas is lowering, most drivers are thinking this is a good thing. This is just what the oil companies want you to think. They raised the price to about $4.85 a gal and now they're lowering it and drivers are happy. Gas is still above $4 gal and we're happy? I think the oil execs are the happy ones.

The allegations were O.P.E,C. is concerned about research in the Artic combined with a Federal Govt. "release" that it had considerable "undisclosed" stored resources of crude.
As of the close today; The NYSE raise was about $1.05 up from around $1.24 per barrel yesterday.
Where's the significance at the pumps?
