Tracy was chosen to participate in a state recycling program.
 Press file photo Tracy
was chosen to take part in the statewide Comprehensive Recycling Community
program, which seeks to spread the benefits of recycling among communities.
The program, established by the California Department of
Conservation, aims to help communities reach an 80 percent recycling rate by
motivating residents to go green.
“One of the reasons we chose Tracy is because we wanted a community that
was on a smaller side and more rural, with good leadership and an engaged group
of people,” said Bridgett Luther, the conservation department’s director.
According to Luther, the simple act of recycling cans and
bottles can earn money for the recycler and even help pay for activities or
supplies at schools and clubs — not to mention be a boon for the environment.
As a participant the recycling program, Tracy
joins cities such as Culver City, Riverside and South
Lake Tahoe.
Mayor Brent Ives said it offers the city an opportunity to increase
the community’s recycling efforts while working with the Department of
Conservation.
The Department of Conservation was present at the Fourth of
July Day in the Park this year and plans to be at future community events, such
as the Tracy Dry Bean Festival, set for Sept. 6 and 7, to spread awareness of
what good recycling could do for the community.
“We hope to see Tracy
as a model community for future participants,” Luther said.
