Tracy’s Babe Ruth All-Stars started their state tournaments this week, hosted by Central California Cal Ripken Baseball, with more games to come today leading up to next week’s championship games.
10-year-olds
“These kids were good,” Tracy head coach Joe “Papa” Saenz said of the Buchanan team. “Last year, they took the whole thing.”
Tracy got hits from Chandlyr Metal, who hit one out to the fence for a double, and from Tucker Morris and Miguel Chao. The team played again Friday night against Edison and will play its third game tonight. The top six of 12 teams in pool play will move on to single elimination, which begins Sunday. The championship game will be Tuesday evening.
The Tracy team was eliminated Thursday at Fig Garden Elementary School in Fresno after going 2-2 for the tournament, including a double-header in 112-degree heat Thursday. Pane said it was still a good outcome for a team that was assembled at the last minute.
“It was a real good opportunity to see the competition they’ll face next year as 12-year-olds,” Pane said.
Tracy’s bats came alive in the third inning of their first game Monday. Lodi started with a three-run lead, which Tracy erased when Anthony Singh hit a three-run homer in the third, and led the way to an 11-6 win over Lodi. Mojo Atwal, Austin Coakley and Daniel Gutierrez pitched for Tracy. In the second game Wednesday, New Bakersfield beat Tracy, 18-1.
Tracy came back in the third game Thursday with an 8-7 win against Ripon. The lead went back and forth until the sixth inning, when Ripon took a three-run lead.
“As 10-year-olds (last year), we knocked them out of the tournament so they were hungry to beat us,” Pane said.
In the bottom of the sixth, Luis Pinedo and Daniel Gutierrez got hits and Mojo Atwal walked to load the bases for Peter Creasman, who came up with a two-run single, followed by another RBI base hit from Eddie Diaz to tie the game. Austin Coakley followed with a double to drive in the winning run for Tracy. In a second game Thursday afternoon, Lodi beat Tracy, 14-1, to knock Tracy out of the tournament.
Head coach Ron Vares said the teams played a close game for the first two innings before Tracy’s six-run third inning and three-run fourth, when the game ended on the 10-run rule.
The team got big contributions at the plate from Nate Scanlon, who had two hits, Ryan Vares and Wesley Thompson.
Tracy plays again today in the quarterfinal game. The championship game will be Wednesday.
