Two Tracy Little League teams claimed District 67 all star championships and spots in sectional tournaments Wednesday.

The Tracy Junior American team took a 9-8 win after a final-inning battle at Sierra High School against the Tracy Junior National All Stars. The single inning the teams played on Wednesday was the eighth inning of a game that was tied 4-4 Tuesday night, but postponed because of darkness.

The Tracy 10/11 National All Stars claimed its championship flag with a 10-3 win against the Spreckels Park All Stars.

The final inning of the Junior League championship showed that both Tracy teams were determined to take the title, but Tracy American took advantage of Tracy National’s infield errors to score the final runs.

“We needed four runs and were playing safe on the bases,” Tracy American Manager Mark Scornaienchi said. “We knew the pressure was on them. We were going to play a second game no matter what.”

Had Tracy National won, it would have required another game Wednesday under the double-elimination tournament format.

“It was a tough way to lose, but they played hard to the end,” Tracy National Manager Mike Loscavio said, adding that his team ended up winning four out of six games, including a rematch with Spreckels Park on Sunday. “We beat every team in the tournament with the exception of Tracy American. That’s what we’ll take from this.”

Tracy National rallied right away Wednesday on walks and on hits from Justin King and Stephen Gonsalves. Eddy Lopez hit a two-run double to right field and Robby Vaughn drove in another to give Tracy National the 8-4 lead.

Tracy American’s Cody Daniel walked and came around to score on a passed ball, and Joe Reboca, Jason Thomassen got base hits and Darren Elbert drove in another to make the score 8-6.

Tracy National catcher Jordan Tencati threw Tracy American’s Jason Thomassen out at home when Thomassen also tried to steal on a passed ball, and Tracy American’s Kyle Scornaienchi was out on a sacrifice grounder.

Two more batters walked to load the bases and Tracy American’s Spencer Freeman hit one past third to get on base and drive one in. On the next play Chris Bacchetti hit one up the middle, and when Tracy National missed the play at second Chase Johnson and Manny Robles came in to score the tying and winning runs.

The Northern California Section 3 tournament begins Saturday, July 12, at Sequoia High School in Redwood City.

Tracy National and Spreckels Park played a close game up until the fifth inning in the championship game Wednesday against Spreckels Park at Neil Hafley School in Manteca. Tracy’s eight-run rally in the fifth clinched the 10-3 win.

Tracy’s 10/11 National All Stars went undefeated in the tournament, and Wednesday’s game was a rematch of their June 29 game, where Tracy National beat Spreckels 3-2.

Tracy National clung to a one-run lead for most of Wednesday’s game, but got a rally started with one out when Anthony Nunez smacked a double, his third for the day, into left-center field. The rest of the team followed, with two-run doubles from Nick Tobeck, Juan Velasquez and Mitch Cowles. Aaron Denholm and Daniel Canada also drove in runs. Braedon Oki also hit for his team with a double in the first inning.

“We battled for a while then we had that big inning with some key hits,” Manager Rick Helzer said. “We outlasted them and played good defense.”

The Northern California Section 3 tournament begins Saturday, July 19, at Los Cerros School in Alamo.
