“Summer is just when we get everyone familiar with what we’re doing.”

Come September, all of the Wolf Pack’s home games will be on the artificial turf in Steve Lopez Stadium.
Lopez, the team’s head coach, said the summer workouts have been under way since the start of June, and the practice provides the opportunity for returning and prospective players to show coaches what they contribute to the team for the 2008 season.
This week’s workouts included seven-on-seven matches with Lincoln, McNair and Liberty high school teams, where quarterbacks, receivers, defensive backs and linemen ran plays without pads.
“Summer is just when we get everyone familiar with what we’re doing,” Lopez said, adding that he has a young team that still needs to work on basics.
The team ended the week at a football camp at Fresno State, where it planned to practice against teams from the Central Valley and Bay Area.
Lopez figures about 100 players have signed up so far, with others dropping by daily. About 70 or so make it out every day, and several of them will fall away by the end of summer.
“Then, you’ve got to get good grades. That’s a big thing on who makes the team,” he said. “We’ll get it down to 50 or 55.”
