The Cal Cougars 93 girls soccer team competed last weekend in the 2008 U.S. Club Soccer National Cup, Region H, at the Ripon and Turlock soccer complexes. The team is based in Hughson and includes five Tracy girls: Alexis Poppoff, Melissa Worthington, Alyssa Strope, Andrea Garcia and Brianna Murawski.
The Cougars were one of 12 teams in the under-15 top-ranked super-group level. The team moved up this year after taking the premiere-level championship in 2007, which qualified them to play at the national competition in North Carolina last July.
For their first game June 21, they played the San Juan Spirits Blue to a 1-1 tie. In their second game June 22, the Cougars played De Anza Force to a 1-1 tie. They dominated America from the state of Utah, 4-0, on Monday morning.
In the semifinal game Monday evening, the Cougars played Cal Rush, ranked eighth in the state, and won 2-1. In the finals, they faced Placer Gold and kept the game scoreless the first half, but Placer Gold came through with four goals in the second half for the 4-0 win.
Upcoming tournaments on the Cougars schedule include the California Cup this weekend, Pleasanton Rage College Showcase in July and the Nike Mustang Stampede College Showcase in Danville in August. • Report scores at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
