Pulled from the airwaves Print E-mail

A former Tracy resident says his pro wrestling show was treated unfairly by public-access channel organizers.

EDITOR,

Many might remember my pro wrestling television shows from several years ago on Channel 26, the city’s public-access channel. The Tracy Wrestling Federation was one of the most popular local TV destinations from 1998 to 2000, when it was pulled from the airwaves simply because one person chose to use his own personal tastes to run the station rather than the opinion of the masses.

Now, almost a decade later, we have the same thing going on at the same station with the current program facilitator. I have worked very hard to make our program something special in other cities, with weekly television shows in Sacramento, Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Galt, West Sacramento, Davis, Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, Lathrop and French Camp. We have live wrestling events, too, in Sacramento and Davis, with several hundred fans who cheer their favorites and boo the bad guys.

I submitted programming to the city of Tracy in 2006, and in a direct attempt to sabotage what I work so hard every week to produce, it was aired at 2 a.m. — a time when the number of people watching it would be very small.

I submitted a letter of grievance, following the city’s guidelines, and I have heard nothing. It’s been two years. Zilch. Not a peep from anyone from the city of Tracy or any other governing body regarding this issue. I think it’s a sad state of affairs.

There’s something bigger going on here. How can those in positions of power push their personal beliefs on the masses through the programs on a public-access channel?

I love Tracy. I grew up in Tracy. I’ve dedicated my life to producing TV shows that others can enjoy. It’s a shame my hometown will never get to see them.

Just because Jake says it doesn't mean it was true.

First of all, none of the boys in Jake's program were professional wrestlers and if they were I'd like to see a copy of their income tax statements so Jake could prove it to the rest of us.

Secondly, from what I understand of the situation it wasn't one individual that made the decision to pull the show despite the fact there was one person that had to notify Jake of this. Several City Staff managerial types made that decision.

Also, the reason the decision was made to air it in the 2 AM time slot, before it was pulled because Jake couldn't take the responsibility to follow the established rules of the time, was because the subject material. With all of the cursing, swearing and damages his program physically caused at public facilities like the current Kora K9 Dog Park in El Pescadero the material was not suitable for broadcasting in a normal timeslot.

But it's nice to see ole Jake is still around and still trying.

If you would like, contact Matt Robinson, follow the directions and rules for such a program and I seriously doubt you will have any problems.

But I do recall you were not to be trusted to be a responsible videographer/editor and follow the rules to get your material shown. If you recall you had access to the facility and when left to your own devices you consciously decided to just go ahead and do your own thing, despite the fact you promised others on City Staff that you would follow the guidelines and rules.

You know that to be true, I know it to be true and everyone still on City Staff that was present at the time knows it to be true.

Besides, your actions are a big reason why channel 26 is no longer the run of the mill public access channel. It's a government access channel. There is a big difference. But then again, you already know this.

Thank you, D.H.for providing the "other side of the coin".

Tell all of the story, not a partial story.

Work with the people who know this territory well, follow regulations as expected of everyone.

Thanks.

I remember watching that show a few times back in 1998, I actually knew a few guys that were in it. I side with Jake here it sounds like censorship to me. Honestly the WWE on television is way worse then Jakes TWF public access show from what I remember and the WWE is shown on prime time slots when children are still awake. Also, I don't recall hearing any swearing maybe Damn or something to that affect but you can also hear words on South Park worse that that. There are always (2) sides to each story true but honestly what was so bad about the TWF? Must not be that bad for all the other public access channels to pick it up in the cities he mentioned in his blog above. Honestly does anyone recall their children going out and becoming a menace to society after watching it the (2) years it ran in Tracy? Sounds like someone running channel 26 to a disliking to the show and that was that.

Quite the contrary, no one at channel 26, then channel 21, either disliked or liked the show. They were just happy to have something to program.

The problem has to do with rules, guidelines and trust. Jake didn't want to follow the rules or guidelines and violated trust in him because of what he did and his refusal to abide by the same rules and guidelines and trust that everyone else had to follow.

And this wasn't with just one of his programs, it was with almost all of them. Repeatedly he had been warned about the problem and repeatedly he assured everyone he would comply.

It all finally came down to a head when he had a key to the facility and then decided to do his own thing regardless of what he had promised to do. That is when he and his programming was removed from channel 26 programming.

It comes right down to this, if you don't follow the rules and guidelines and cannot be trusted to keep your word then no public entity, government access or public access need to feel obligated to do anything for you. It's as basic as that and has nothing to do with the show itself or how it affects the kids watching it.

Just like with commercial television, there are rules and guidelines that must be followed to get material out over the air.

If Jake wishes to be successful in his career of producing shows for television I strongly recommend he start following the rules and guidelines levied on his programming and be responsible to fulfill his promises that he will follow them. Otherwise he will have a lot of trouble getting his programming out over the public media.

But I don't have anything to do with it really, that's why he needs to talk to Matt Robinson and work it all out through him.
