Little League Roundup E-mail
Written by Bob Brownne / Tracy Press

Four Tracy teams made it through the first rounds of the District 67 Little League Tournaments of Champions.

Junior

The Tracy American A’s started their tournament with a 16-2 win Saturday over the Spreckels Park champions at Paul Weston Park in Stockton. A’s pitcher Spencer Freeman pitched all six innings, gave up three hits and struck out 11 Spreckels batters.

The Spreckels offense had a 2-1 lead going into the fourth inning, before the A’s got big hits from Kyle Scornaienchi, who had two doubles and three RBIs, Joe Reboca and Darren Elbert.

On Tuesday, the A’s came from behind with a three-run fourth inning for a 5-4 win against the Cardinals from Salida Little League. Salida carried a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning and scored one more in the top of the fourth.

Miguel Orozco and Steven Riley got on base for the A’s in the bottom of the fourth and came in on a hit from Cody Daniel to tie the game at 4-4. Coaches from the Salida team protested the tying run and insisted that their catcher had tagged Riley out at the plate, but the umpire ruled that the catcher didn’t have control of the ball. Daniel came in for the go-ahead run after Reboca hit the ball past Salida’s shortstop.

"We’ve been down before, but that’s the good thing about being the home team: We get the last out if we want it," coach Joe Daniel said.

The A’s are now headed for the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday. The championship game is at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The Tracy National Dodgers lost their first game 7-0 to Salida on Saturday and came back Sunday to beat Spreckels Park, 11-1. Steve Gonzalves started on the mound, and Kendrick Bergmann closed the game. The Dodgers got big hits from Christian Lopez, who hit a double and a triple, and Anthony Machuca, who drove in two on a single.

The Dodgers will play again at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Major League

The undefeated Spreckels Park champions beat the Tracy National D’Backs on Saturday, 10-2, at Northgate Park in Manteca. The D’Backs were scheduled to play the Northgate champions Sunday, but they had to forfeit, because the team could not field enough players. That puts the D’Backs out of the TOC.

The Tracy American A’s beat the Mountain House Astros, 15-0, on Sunday in a game that ended after four innings on the mercy rule. The win included a no-hit pitching performance by C.J. Butcher and home runs from Butcher, Anthony Talaugon and Kaleel Peebles, who hit a bases-loaded shot in the third inning.

The A’s played again Tuesday night against the Spreckels Park champions. The score was not available at press time. The winner of that game will play in the semifinals Thursday. The championship game will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Gillen Field in Northgate Park.

The Spreckels Park team beat the Tracy Little League National Dodgers, 14-4, in the first round Saturday at Salida Park, but the Dodgers came back Sunday in the lower bracket to beat the Weston Ranch Yankees in a
15-5 contest on the 10-run rule.

The Dodgers then beat the Patterson Yankees, 18-1, on Monday afternoon, ending the game in the fourth inning on the mercy rule. The Dodgers will play again at 5:30 p.m. today.

The Tracy Little League Minor American champion Yankees were eliminated from the tournament Sunday. The Manteca Little League champion White Sox beat the Yankees 8-1 on Saturday, and the Lathrop Reds beat them, 7-4, in the consolation-bracket game Sunday.

The Yankees got some good pitching from Tyler Schlotter on Saturday and Harrison Difuntorum on Sunday. The Yankees also got some big hits Sunday from Kenny Valencia, who hit a double, and Damien Chavez.

The championship game for the District 67 Minor Division will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Salida Park. If the Dodgers move up through the consolation bracket to win that game, they will force a second game at 10 a.m. Sunday because of the double-elimination rule.
