Seven Tracy players named to Lions’ All-Star team for the ages

Seven former Tracy football players who went on to careers in the game were named to the Lions Club All-Time All-Star football teams.

The list was announced in advance for the 35th annual Central California Lions All-Star Football game at 7 p.m. June 21 at the University of the Pacific’s Stagg Memorial Stadium in Stockton.

CalHiSports.com editor Mark Tennis, who lives in Stockton and is working on publicity for the game, compiled the list.

Wayne Schneider, Tracy High’s coach for 26 years through 1994, said players on the list went on to distinguish themselves in college ball, in the pros and in football-related careers. They won’t play at the All-Star game, but some will be in the stands and some are involved with this year’s teams.

Tracy players on the North offense include lineman Brad Smith, Tracy High Class of 1980. He played nose guard for Brigham Young University from 1981 to 1984, when the Cougars won the national championship.

Lineman Gary Barlow graduated from Tracy High in 1985, graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1989 and played with the New York Giants. Since 2001, he has been the head coach of San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs football team.

Quarterback Greg Ennis graduated from Tracy High in 1984 and went on to be the quarterback for the Stanford Cardinal from 1986 to 1988.

The North defense includes linebacker Mike Serpa, Tracy High Class of 1984, who played for the University of Southern California for four years, including three Rose Bowl games.

The North multipurpose team includes wide receiver and defensive back Tim Brown, Tracy High Class of 1986. He played at Sacramento State University and is now a local chiropractor who also serves as a trainer for the present Bulldogs squad.

Linebacker John Gonzalez, Class of 1981, went on to play at Oregon State University and played in the Canadian Football League for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Defensive lineman and fullback Dell Hawkins, Tracy High Class of 1999, played for Fresno State, and the Stockton Lightning of the arenafootball2 league, and will be one of the assistant coaches for this year’s North team.

Schneider also mentioned Logan Mankins, Mariposa High Class of 2000, a former Fresno State player and tight end on the South team. Mankins is an offensive guard for the New England Patriots and the area’s first player to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. The Patriots went undefeated in the 2007 regular season and in the 2008 post-season until their 17-14 loss to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
