Those who signed up will get refunds, though it's unclear whether the city will recoup any of its costs — or what those costs were.
City spokesman Matt Robinson said that the Gus Macker 3-on-3 event at West Valley Mall drew only about 15 teams, which prompted the Macker organization, which runs similar tournaments around the U.S., to cancel the event. “They prefer to have at least 40 teams to make it a decent tournament,” Robinson said.
The Tracy City Council voted in December to host the tournament as a project of the Mayor’s Community Youth Support Network.
The city extended the registration deadline for a couple of weeks with the hope of getting more teams involved, but still didn’t get enough teams signed up.
A woman at the Macker tournament office in Greenville, Mich., said the teams that did send in the $116 entry fee will get a refund, but it was unclear if the city would get back any of the money it spent, or how much it had spent, to bring the tournament to town. The $28,000 the city set aside for the event included a $10,000 fee for tournament management, training and registration, and the rest would have paid for T-shirts and trophies, travel expenses for the Macker staff, staff expenses during the tournament and the cost of transporting the Macker organization’s basketball hoops and other equipment.
