Carla Fansler goes out a few times a year to play golf with friends and co-workers with the goal of breaking 100. Even after she hit a hole-in-one at Tracy Golf and Country Club today, she had to see the ball in the cup before she really believed it.

She was part of a threesome that included Tim Crain, her co-worker in the physical therapy department at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital; and Marty Milina, playing in the Tracy Chamber of Commerce 2008 Spring Tournament.

She used a five-wood on the par-3 fourth hole, a 148-yard shot from the red tee, and figured as long as it was straight and she had the distance right, she’d be in good shape.

“I saw it hit the green,” she said. “I looked down to grab my tee, and they were yelling, ‘It went in the hole!’ I thought they were kidding. I’d never hit a ball like that.”

It was the type of shot she figures could get her out to the golf course more often.

“I think I’m going to make time for it now.”

The tournament is a benefit for the chamber, and the hole-in-one sponsors included Keller Williams and Mortgage Designers, which put up $18,000 worth of mortgage payments for anyone who could shoot an ace on the fourth hole.

“With all the foreclosures going on, this could help somebody today,” company owner Ron Cedillo said. “We’ve sponsored holes but never sponsored six months’ worth of mortgage payments.”

Chamber executive director Dave Tillman said he’s glad to see something happen that adds a little prestige to the chamber’s tournament, which attracted 86 golfers in its second year.

“Anytime you get someone who hits a hole in one and wins $18,000, that’s a great tournament,” he said, adding that in 15 years he has organized benefit tournaments it’s the third time he’s had a participant record a hole-in-one.

The country club keeps plaques on the wall of the bar with the names of everyone who has hit holes-in-one on the four par-3’s on the course. Eleven people aced the fourth hole between 2001 and 2006. Cedillo said the coincidence is that his brother-in-law, Nunzio Napoli, who also played Monday, hit a hole-in-one on the fourth on Saturday.
