Quick hits:

Losing confidence: Americans are gloomier about the direction of the country than at any point since 1992, and Democrats have matched their biggest advantage in 25 years as the party better able to deal with the nation’s main problems, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Numbers:

6: Number of seats removed from some BART cars in an effort to make room for more riders who stand, as well as more bikes and luggage.

$7: Amount proposed that cash payers crossing the Golen Gate bridge would fork over during commute times and weekend evenings. The decision will be made in July.

12,000: Estimate at press time of people killed in China’s 7.9-magnitude quake.
