Five West High soccer players were named to the Tri-City Athletic League All-League list for 2008.
Laurel Lewis was named most valuable player among defenders in the league for her play as a sweeper on the West team’s backfield.

Seniors Natalie Shaw, Giselle Enciso, Melissa Brannan and Brittany Bennett were also named as All-League selections for 2008.

West coach Able Dorado said he’s glad to see Lewis get recognition from the league for her role on the team.

“It’s up to her to keep them from scoring goals, and she’s the last player in the back. She did a wonderful job back there,” Dorado said. “I give credit not just to the players who score the goals, but the ones who make the plays.”

Dorado added that the key plays regularly happen when defenders take the ball back and move it back to scoring position. Lewis is a junior and was a starting sweeper on the team last year.

“I’m happy that she’s coming back next year. She’s a dedicated player.”
Other MVPs named by the TCAL were St. Mary’s senior Jacquelyn LeHallier, a mid-fielder; Stagg junior Bre Brockl, an attacker; St. Mary’s sophomore Kim Mata, a goalie; and Tokay senior Katie Ladd, another goalie.

The San Joaquin Athletic Association will announce its All-League selections for girls soccer next week.
