Girls sophomore teams finish in first place E-mail

Both the West and Tracy high sophomore softball teams took their respective league titles after they finished undefeated in league play Thursday.

“All of us had good defense and offense,” West freshman Kelsea Taylor said before the team’s win against St. Mary’s on Thursday. “It’s been a really good year. Next year will be, too.”

West went 10-0 in the Tri-City Athletic League and 21-3 overall. Coach Martin Miller said that the three losses were all close, with the Wolf Pack behind by four total runs. Tracy beat West, 1-0, Sierra won 2-1 and Lodi won 3-1.

West pitcher Andi Anderson said the team faced its toughest competition in the NorCal Classic at the Tracy Sports Complex back in March, including a 5-3 win over Sierra on the Pack’s way to a third-place finish in the tournament.

“We had to stay focused that whole game,” she said. “We couldn’t give them anything. After that tournament, everyone started hitting well.”

Miller noted that Taylor led her team in runs batted-in, with 35 for the season. Anderson was the team’s leading pitcher with 109 strikeouts in 13 starts, including five games in a row with 12 or more strikeouts per game.

Tracy’s sophomores also took first place in league play, had a 10-0 record in the San Joaquin Athletic Association, and finished 16-2 overall. Coach Gerianne McGee said the team dominated the league, with Lodi being the closest competition for Tracy this year.

As the season closes four of the Tracy sophomores will join the varsity team when it heads to the playoffs in Sacramento next weekend.

Those players include Stephanie Fisher, who was the Bullpups’ leading pitcher and one of the leading hitters, and also joined the varsity team in the playoffs last year. Others to move up early include Piper Johnson, Natalya Motyka and Latoya Whiten.

McGee said the team went into every game with an all-out effort, even after it became clear early on that some of these wins would be a lopsided.

“They’re competitive to the point where they’ll play hard no matter what,” McGee said. “It’s contagious to the other girls.”
