Howard said she’s played competitive basketball since fourth grade and soon knew she would continue to pursue the game through high school and college when she got involved in AAU leagues.
She considered other colleges, but liked Humboldt for its location on the North Coast. She signed her letter of intent Thursday, about two weeks after the Lumberjacks’ staff offered her a partial scholarship.
“When I went to Humboldt, it seemed like the right place,” she said. “The team is a good group of girls. They’re like a family.”
Howard was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Wolf Pack team for the past two seasons and was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Tri-City Athletic league for the 2007-08 season with 19 points and 13.2 rebounds per-game in league play. She also holds the West High School record for single season rebounds, 323, and rebounds in a single game, 23.
She added that her record as a high school player puts her in good company as she joins a strong team.
“I know coming in as a freshman, you’re not going to be the top dog, but I can work my way up to that.”
The Lumberjacks went to the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships this year and finished their 2007-08 season 12-8 in conference and 16-12 overall. • We want to hear what you have to say.
