The second round — and the players from Armijo High — were not kind to the Bulldogs.

Two local tennis players made it to the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section individual tennis tournament Thursday at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto before they were eliminated from competition.

Tracy’s Neil Thakor, the San Joaquin Athletic Association champion, came back from a loss in his first set to win the first round in three sets against Matt Illigan of Monterey Trail High School of Elk Grove. Thakor beat Illigan, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, and then lost to Ken Hobert of Grace Davis High of Modesto, 6-2, 6-2.

West’s Brett Spadoni, the Tri-City Athletic League champion, won his first-round matches in two 6-0 sets against Bernard Cacho of Grace Davis. Spadoni lost 6-2, 6-1, in the second round to No. 1 seed Steve Dawson of Jesuit High of Carmichael.
Tracy’s Quinn O’Brien, who took second in the SJAA tournament, went up against three-time section champion Nick Andrews of Jesuit High and lost 6-1, 6-1.

Dawson and Andrews went on to the final match of the singles tournament, with Andrews winning the section championship 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

West High’s doubles teams also were eliminated in the first round. West’s Daniel de la Cruz and Serggio Antonio lost to Anthony Narsi and Barrett Doo of Pitman High of Turlock, 6-4, 6-4. West’s Kevin Canoy and Parker Lewis lost to Kashick Bangalore and Atul Bali of Modesto High School, 6-3, 6-3.

Their opponents lost in the second round, and the winner of the championship match was the team of Ryan Kim and Suresh Eswaran of Jesuit High, who beat Jimmy Stone and Simba Baratti of Davis High from Yolo County, 6-1, 6-0.

Armijo 5, Tracy 4

Tracy’s tennis team was knocked out of the second round of the section playoffs Wednesday, as the team from Armijo High of Fairfield won five of nine matches at Tracy High.

Tracy coach Dean Reese said he was far from disappointed in the outcome.

“Armijo has a very strong team. Each one of my players went out and gave it his best shot,” he said, adding that Tracy finished its season as champions of the San Joaquin Athletic Association and made the playoffs for the third year in a row.

While several Tracy players moved on as individuals, the team struggled.

In the singles, Thakor lost to Joey Vink 6-4, 6-3; O’Brien beat Benny Rooman 6-1, 7-6; Tracy’s John Trinidad lost to Graham Wolf 6-2, 4-6, 6-3; Tracy’s Chris Pope lost to Mike Lavell 6-3, 7-6; Tracy’s Miguel Gonzalez beat John Dodini 3-6, 7-6, 6-4; and Tracy’s Mitchell Adams lost to Christian Yoo 6-2, 6-0.

In the doubles, Tracy’s Niraj Punjya and Cameron Mercurio beat Alex Merrick and Wilfred Manzano 6-1, 6-4; Tracy’s Vatsal Jhanlani and Sanjit Gill lost to Dominic Recella and Lalo Perez 6-3, 6-4; and Tracy’s Ryan Kelly and Kevin Camacho beat Richard Cheng and Kyle Baldwin 6-0, 7-6.
