Glenn Moore/Tracy Press This means West High can swim in physical education classes this fall and the school’s water polo and swim teams can practice at home. Since the school opened 15 years ago, its teams practiced in pools at Dr. Powers Park and Tracy High School. Some practices stretched as late as 8 p.m. in order to squeeze all of Tracy schools’ teams in. “They’ve had to work around everyone else,” West High athletic director Steve Thornton said of the school’s swim teams. “Now we’ll be able to schedule classes and teams anytime we want.” Two diving boards still need to be installed and chemicals need to be balanced before the pool officially opens for swim May 15. Thornton hopes to let students test the waters in the new pool during finals week. The city paid 25 percent of the $5.5 million to complete the pool, named after longtime swim coach Pinkie Phillips. West High will turnover the pool each summer for city-run activities. The complex includes men’s and women’s restrooms, 16 starting blocks for relays and 10 racing lanes.

Glenn Moore/Tracy Press “It’s nice to see the finished product,” the project superintendent Craig Bonnell said. “The stadium and the pool look awesome.” A dedication ceremony for the Steve Lopez Stadium and the Pinkie Phillips Aquatic Center is 10 a.m. May 17 at the school, 1775 W. Lowell Ave. •We want to hear what you have to say. It is great that West High finally got a pool. To bad the timing is off with a water shortage looming over our heads.
Dog, consider that kids without a pool often play in the sprinkler I think a pool may be the right choice...(and most of the kids swimming will "contribute" to the pools level)....
I am so excited to graduate at West High, to be the first graduating class from West to graduate at West! I only wish the pool had been ready for water polo this year.
Yeah! It's awesome that the pool and stadium are both finally ready! I'm going over to West right now to jump in! Woohoo!
It is awesome that the pool is finally finished. What I don't understand is why does the waterpolo team have to practice this summer at Tracy AGAIN! West finally has a pool - so why is the waterpolo team still being banished to another pool (no offense to Tracy High - we appreciate the use of your pool - and know that it is also an incovenience to them). Why couldn't someone work out a time slot for West to have their practices. They work all summer long so that they are ready when the season starts. They should be given the opportunity to use their home field pool to get ready. I bet the football team will be practicing on the new field. Once Again - Waterpolo is treated like the ugly stepchild. They have a awesome new pool, some really great coaches, too bad they don't have the school's support.
