![]() Subway and General Mills will scrutenize this sandwich. Glenn Moore/Tracy Press Josh Sjowall, a 17-year-old West High senior, says he went to the Subway at 1986 W. 11th St. after school Monday and ordered a foot-long roast beef, ham and turkey sandwich. He said he went home, ate half it, took a bite from the second half of the sandwich, and said his thumb felt something sticking out of the underside of the bread. “What the hell is this!” he exclaimed. Josh says he turned over the sandwich and saw what he thought was a bolt jutting out of the sandwich. The metal looks like some kind of nut with a small threaded nozzle on one end. After he discovered the metal, the boy said he went with his mother Jeri Sjowall to the deli to show employees the sandwich. He said employees at first threw the sandwich away, but gave it back to him when he asked for it and called the store manager, Pardeep Kaur. Josh said the woman was apologetic and tried to get ahold of someone from Subway’s parent company.
“She was helpful,” he said. “She definitely agreed that it
was baked into the bread.” “We are aware of the situation and we are working with General Mills,” Herrera said. “It is under investigation. We take this very, very seriously.” Herrera said no conclusions have yet been reached about how the piece of metal got in the bread or where it might have come from. The three-day-old sandwich was sent by courier on Thursday to the General Mills headquarters in Minnesota.
![]() Jeri Sjowall and the sandwich in question. Glenn Moore/Tracy Press Herrera and Foster said that frozen loaves pass through metal detectors before they leave General Mills factories. Jeri Sjowall said she received a call from someone in the customer service department of General Mills, who she said gave Sjowall a phone number and claims number for a Hartford Insurance office, though Foster could not confirm that. “We’re retrieving the sample for the investigation,” Foster said. Jeri Sjowall said she publicized the discovery because "I don't want this to happen to someone else. If they've got loose bolts inside their oven, they need to take care of that."

No one was hurt. No one was injured. Take it back and get your money back and move on. I don't know why some people insist on making mountains out of moles hills. Money, perhaps???

Why would she need the number to Hartford Insurance... No one was hurt. Get your free meal and call it even. Now Subway has a bad rep, isn't that enough? Just a thought!

excuse me i am the boys sister and i know for a fact none of this was fake we would not do anthing like this why would we waste our time we didnt want all this to be a big deal and we respected the people at the subway my mom and brother said that they were very kind about it we wouldnt want to hurt there reputation my brother said he will still eat there and everything so everyone just stop about it no one was hurt and its over with nobody is telling you not to eat there anymore
OMG, I'm sorry but it is a big deal... What, you think allowing the TP to run this article and pictures it would not create a ruckus! Maybe there should have been more thought about advertising it. Nothing against you or your family but I can't see where this would not hurt Subway's business. I hope all turns out well for both parties involved.
why couldnt he just get another sandwhich and call it even and go home and go LIVE on with his life
BUT no he had to go make a big issue about and ruin the SUBWAY reputation this is surly goning to effect subways reputation WHO cares if your brother is still going to eat there??? its already gone way to far it in the TRACY PRESS and on THE Sacramento bee so i really dont get why it will make a difference if your brother is still gonna go eat there!! WELL i dont really care about all this im still going to go eat there so get over this and live your on. thank you
some of you people are ridiculous if this had happen to you would you just get your money back probabily not you say u would now but would you really this is about finding out why there was a piece of metal in the sandwitch and out of all the stories in the world why would he make up a piece of metal in a sandwitch story think about in people
i'm tha sisters friend. && shes right. so get over it!
stupid people. if you wanan eat there go ahead it your choice! noones stopping you or trying to stop you. sorry they wer trying to prevent this from happening again just to SAVE YOUR HEALTH && possibly YOUR LIFE. seriously. sorry their nice peeeps!
I found an adult toy in my food one time, but I never complained. I put it in the freezer for a few days and stayed home the next weekend.
the article is about letting people know what can be in ur food DUHH some people have to be ignorant and think all the kid is looking for is money. as you can see in the picture it looks like it is baked in there. this should be a big issue i dont want any of my family members biting into a piece of metal ruining there teeth or swalloing and rusty piece of metal. DO YOU? probably not
thank you guys we would definitly N0T make this up like my friend said this could help people the only reason why this was a big deal is because we would not want this to happen to anyone else thats why it got out think about this what if it was your kid that ate that or bit into it they could get really sick or break a tooth or worse
WHEN YOU ORDER A SANDWICH FROM SUBWAY THEY SLICE THE BREAD OPEN IN HALF...SUBWAY WORKERS AREN'T BLIND AND I WOULD THINK THAT THEY'D NOTICE THE METAL IN THE BREAD...THIS A SCAM LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. NICE TRY JOSH

Talk about getting your vitamins and minerals!
I would have taken the sandwich back and gotten a refund, asked for an investigation and expected at least a gift certificate for the inconvenience... but how & why did the newspaper get involved?
Usually, people stand at the other side of the counter watching the food preparer prepare their sub sandwich, at least I do. They handle the bread alot in the removing of it from the oven, to the counter, slice in half, split open, place what you ordered in the sub, condiments and so on.
I fail to see how that could be missed? By the food preparer and one who watches from the other side when placing orders for additionals on the sub. I am glad they are going to investigate this matter. The truth will come out, one way or another. No offense to anyone.

Reading this thread makes me laugh. Not what it is about but how it is written. This thread sounds like it is being written by a 5th grader. I'm hoping high school kids know how to write better than what they have shown in this thread. Come on guys, a few periods and commas won't hurt. Now the metal, that might.
P.S. Learn the differences of using there, their, and they're.
Nimo - LOL - Obviously a teacher... Has anyone figured out how to turn this into a racial debate yet? Im suprised it's gone this long.
Josh - your spelling is HORRIBLE.
My son was 14 and bit into a frozen burrito that he had cooked at home and bit a rock. He cracked his molar, and years later was the proud owner of a crown - that cost almost $800. It is a shame this happened, but why is the paper involved. I would have taken it back and raised hell too. I used to work at a Subway and do not see how the bread could have been baked, prepared, and served without feeling it on their hand.
Did you ever slice a piece of bread? Did you ever watch them slice a piece of bread? Tell me how such a large protruding object could not be recognized during the preparation and wrapping of a Subway sandwich? Even the dullest knife and insensitive hands would have detected this metal. Eventually justice will be served!
"why is the paper involved?"
About the newspaper, she called them? "Jeri Sjowall said she publicized the discovery because "I don't want this to happen to someone else. If they've got loose bolts inside their oven, they need to take care of that." Maybe the paper would not be involved if Mom did not call them?
Anyway, the report will come out. I still don't see how they missed it, pretty nearly impossible with all that handling?
a bolt?.....who needs vitamins? ....need IRON in your diet?.....at least it's baked in and sterilized......
Heading out for sandwich! Going to my favorite Subway on 11th Street! Have been a regular customer there for over three years! Never a problem. Nice People. Great sandwiches! Will continue to be a customer for many more years. Encourage everyone else to do the same. This is an unfortunate incident no matter how you view it, but certainly not worthy of all the attention it is receiving.
Very simple explanation. A piece of metal fell off of something during the making of the bread. No harm, no foul. This doesn't happen very often, but can. Subway should have given them a few coupons for free sandwiches, and investigated why it happened. No big deal. ALWAYS LOOK BEFORE YOU BITE.

I think that this is a joke and is uneccessary for the Tracy Press to put in the newspaper. I feel bad for the owners.
Why make such a big deal out of something that didnt harm anyone.
Why is everyone going back and forth with this issue...it is not your place to say weather this is true or fake, the family involved and subway will deal with the issue, if it is fake they will get what they deserve, if it is not they will also get what they deserve. Why would someone make up a bogus story like this and use a bolt of all things for god sakes...even an employee says it looked "baked in" i have managed the food business myself and stranger things have happened. Good luck to the family!
Sue for what? I happen to be an attorney. It will be easy to prove negligence, but you also have to have damages. In this case there wasn't even a broken tooth so no pain and suffering. In the finger in the chili case (fake) had it been true, there would have been damages for mental suffering etc. In this case Subway will say they are sorry, and that's about it. Only because of good customer relations will they do something for the alleged victim. I don't doubt in the least bit that this claim is legit because why would you fake it when it won't get you more than a little publicity in the Tracy Press, and maybe a couple more footlongs.
you people do not know the family, and dont have a right to accuse them of making it up. You know damn well if this happen to you, you would do the same thing. so just because it didnt happen to you you dont need to be making rude comments. My best to the family
people days can do anything for money
really the mom is saying she just wants the best for everyone well the best was that she just dopped the whole thing and got a refund and SUBWAYs oven is a 1piece thing so how the hell did a bolt fall into the sandwhich??

Wow - people need to learn to spell and write properly. What's with all the lower & upper case letters? It makes those of you who do it seem like illiterates. Oh, and a zero is not a proper substitute for an "o" - just letting you know.
I'm glad it was in the Tracy Press. I think it just shows that you need to be careful when eating out, because you never know what can happen. I don't know the family, but I am really glad that they went to the paper to inform people. I doubt they're doing it to ruin reputations or make a profit. Maybe I just like giving people the benefit of the doubt, but I sincerely believe they just wanted people to be informed.
OH NO MCDONALDS COFFEE WAS SO HOT AND I SPILLED IT ALL OVER MYSELF IM SUIING!!!!!!!!
Oh wait... Who cares if you found a bolt in a sandwich, take it out and down the thing.

This is a family who is a respected member of our community. Josh has been raised as a good kid. This "mom" would take the same action if this had happened to anyone's child. A business needs to be held to the highest possible standards - especially with food.
Well knowing subway they wouldnt put in a screw in the sandwhich
and just look at the screw how big it is im sure the workers at subway are NOT blind ok and you might think you know the family but as you should know PEOPLE CAN DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY!!!!!! well good luck to both sides and the truth shall be revealed soon!
He could have dropped the sandwich and it picked up the bolt, check the plastic bag, if there is a tear, then that is what happened.
Hey Josh, I'm a 45yr old fart that eats at Subway. I believe your story, and If I was you, I'd go ask Subway for one years worth of foot longs for you "AND your friends" for bringing this to their attention....!
Sincerely, Satasfied Subway Customer
OMG! itz a piece of metal itz goin to kill me!
wow! give da sandwich bak get u'r money n even when they offered to give u 2 sandwiches u still make a big fuss over dat. when da boi didn't say anything y did da mom hav to mak a big deal? i hav been a customer 4 over 2 year n i had no prob. this subway has da best food n customer service in whole Tracy. So now i hope u still go to da 11th street subway let everything go by n start over. dis was really stupid dat they put a little thing on a newspaper dat was really stupid
Call Mark Conolly or Celeste Garamendi. Mark is a lawyer. Perhaps he could help. Did this have something to do with the City Council? That's one way to scr@w em. LOL!!! Just trying to help. She could use the tip? Right?
ITS NOT A BIG DEAL AND IT IS BEING HANDLED PROPERLY. YOU ALL JUST MAKE ISSUES SEEM WORSE THAN THEY ACTUALLY ARE. GET A LIFE PEOPLE.
if you look at the pic you can tell its baked it.. i would sue those arabs haha then i would run the subway the american way
ok all yoo people saying stuff about them getting money
they did not even mention that they were suing so all yoo people wasting time saying "there only doing it for the money" yoo dont noe squat cuz believe me i'm a friend of the sister and been a friend for many years and they are not planning on suing they just wanted to inform yoo that there was a object that shouldnt have been there in his food GOT IT so stop saying stuff like that I had a live worm in my salad at a restaurant in Modesto, I got a card for a free appetizer when I return and they comped the salad. OK! no biggee to me but to others it might have been. Hey, make sure you wash your lettuce even the bags you buy at the store. We would like to do a reality show on it, blind fold a few customers when they buy a salad to see who eats the worm. May as well make a fear factor out of it. See who wins the $50,000. Josh you are ok, just keep a positive outlook on life.
Personally, I think the counter clerks noticed that Josh had an iron deficiency and tried to help out.
I have known Josh Sjowall since the day he was born and his integrity is beyond reproach. I believe his story 100%. Given that...Subway or General Mills needs to find out how this bolt got into this sandwich and make sure it never happens again. Bottom-line, end of story. I've know Jeri Sjowall for over 30 years and same goes for her. Let's wait for the result of the investigation and see what is determined.....
