One suspected car thief was arrested in northern Tracy this afternoon, but a second suspect escaped police, sheriffs deputies and the CHP.
Tracy police officers prepare to enter a backyard off Gabriel Drive as they search for a suspect from a stolen car that fled on foot Wednesday afternoon. Glenn Moore/Tracy Press A police chase Wednesday afternoon ended with one suspected car thief in custody and another free in a northern Tracy neighborhood.
The incident began at 1:20 p.m. when officers in a California Highway Patrol cruiser exited Interstate 205 on Tracy Boulevard and saw two men standing beside a 1990 Acura Integra in the parking lot of the Quality Inn.
When the men spotted the officers, according to CHP public affairs officer Bob Rickman, they ran toward the back door of the inn. One was caught, but the other escaped by hopping into nearby backyards, eventually leading officers toward a neighborhood near the intersection of Buthmann Avenue and Gabriel Drive.
The suspect in custody was arrested and taken to San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp after the CHP found that the Integra had been reported stolen out of Hayward. He was booked on suspicion of possessing stolen property.
Drugs and suspected stolen property were found inside the Acura, Rickman said.
San Joaquin County Sheriffs deputies, Tracy police and California Highway Patrol officers cover the area of Gabriel Drive off Buthmann Avenue. Glenn Moore/Tracy Press Tracy police officers and San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies helped set up a perimeter around where the suspect fled. K-9 units were called in and the surroundings were scoured, but officers did not find the second suspect, described by Rickman as a 6-foot-tall white man with light brown hair, wearing a gray sleeveless shirt emblazoned with the number 3. It is unknown whether the man is armed.
Rickman said anyone with information about the suspect can call 943-8600.
