Downtown station needs a name Print E-mail

A City Council subcommittee is tasked with finding a name for the to-be-built multimodal station, and it's seeking community suggestions.

After christening a high school pool, football field and a handful of parks this past year, there’s another project in Tracy that needs a name.

The City Council charged a subcommittee Tuesday night to come up with a name for downtown Tracy’s future bus and train terminal, which until now has been generically dubbed the "multimodal station."

Councilwoman Evelyn Tolbert and Councilman Steve Abercrombie volunteered at the council meeting to serve on the subcommittee.

The committee will debate whether to name the entire station or come up with different names for different parts of the station, Abercrombie said.

The 6,800-square-foot hub is slated to open as early as summer 2009, according to the city, which has two more years and $12 million available in state grants and transportation tax money to build the terminal. Already, the city has spent several million dollars on consultants, soil tests, design and acquiring the actual land.

Coming up with a name at this point is mandatory, Parks and Community Service Director Rod Buchanan said. Logistically, it needs a name before construction starts and signs can be bought, he added. But those aren’t the only reasons.

"Then we want the public to take ownership of the project," he said. "We want them to take an interest in this ... to take a part in its future."

Four years ago, the city adopted a set of guidelines for naming public places. The center could be named after a person, the site’s geographic location or after communities that gave it historic significance, to name a few criteria.

"It’s important that this is a public process, an inclusive process," Buchanan said. "We want to get diverse opinions before we make a decision on the name."

When built, the station would face Sixth Street, and a clock tower facing Central Avenue would serve as a main entrance. The buildings would include a bus lobby and conference rooms, according to city staff reports. More than 18,000 square feet of parking lots, bus loading zones and landscaping would surround the terminal.

Once construction starts, it should take up to a year to finish, city officials said, though Abercrombie added it’s too soon to tell when a name will be voted on.

If we could get greyhound to come down from Grant Line, we could call it something useful, like "The Greyhound Station." We've got something called the ETK theater, so maybe something equally cryptic like, "The WTF Station?"

Otherwise, maybe we should stick to something more accurately descriptive like,

-- Another stupid way to waste millions of dollars
-- The central valley's most expensive taxi stand (in a town without taxis!)
-- A good place to hang out and try to sell crack, or my favorite,

On a serious note since apparently few on here can make a "real" suggestion that a normal person could take seriously.
How about naming it "Ellis Station", or how about naming it after the family who were the first residents of Tracy, or perhaps after Jean Wilson who has her own place in Tracy's railroad history?

How about:

-"Grand Central Crackhead Station"

-"The Tracy Inbred Export Station"

The slogan can be: "At the Tracy Inbred Export Station, we Deliverance!"

Other slogans could be:

"White trash drop off 1st Thursday of the month!"

"The Tracy GayStation 3"

"The Tracy Ullman Station" Come get canceled!

"We accept foodstamps for fare!"

"We have complimentary pay-toilets. Bring your own toilet paper. Or buy it from the homeless guys who stole it all out of the stalls."

"Free depleted Uranium in every breath!"

All those names involving "Trains" and "Transit" and evoking Tracy's Rail History would be great if, uh, if any TRAINS were stopping there. But since all of the regional transit organizations have pretty much poohed all over the idea of serving the station with trains or buses, maybe we could come up with a more realistic name? On the other hand, maybe we could build it as a giant train station, and then it could immediately go out of business so we could close it down and turn it into a Spaghetti Factory like they did in Fullerton or Sacramento.

For those of you who are newcomers to Tracy the references to Tracy's railroad history are appropriate even if trains never stop there because the station will be built where the original rail yard was. As for trains not stopping there, all I can say is never say never. It could happen someday.
Dale-Rail Crossings Station is a good idea as well.

The co-workers told me last night that the city of Tracy prior to election time comes up with "grand" plans to induce the voters to swing their way. They told me it will be like "Gateway", plans on hold for 5 more years. Just like "Sportspark".

Will believe it when the "ground breaking" ceremony happens. Nothing is set in stone? I do hope they succeed in sticking with this plan and begin in 2009.

Personally, I think it will help the City of Tracy. With barrel of oil at $126.00 (rising faster than Goldman Sach's predictions on the oil price). Alternative transportation is needed at this time.

Has anyone been to a greyhound/bus/train station in the 'good' part of a town? It will be a haven for the homeless and low lifes. They have a lot of work to do to update the town if they want people to flock to it and feel safe. They need to get rid of some businesses like Livermore did. If they don't anything new they will build will fail.

I think this station will be great. A big problem now, if I want to get a hooker at lunch time, I have to drive all the way out to N. Tracy Blvd and take them to the Motel 6 or the Holiday Inn Express, which set you back an arm and a leg. Heck, the room costs more than the hooker. But this way, with the station there, we can just zip over to the station, grab a nice gal, and head out to the Five Star on 11th street. We can save time and money. That's what I call a win-win

And folks, I know there are working gals on Central, but for the life of me, walking down the street, I can't tell them apart from the locals. I'd hate to ask one of them for a date, and have her turn out to be a city councilwoman or the head of the arts leadership alliance or whatever. Best not to take a chance. If they are hanging out at the greyhound station, you just know.

What an opportunity to demonstrate Tracy’s pride and heritage by naming a pinnacle focal point after one of it’s predominate citizens.

Carlton E. Ritter, who facilitated the development and sale of Parker Acres; the homes between Grantline Road down to Eleventh Street, Tracy Boulevard on the West, to East Street. He also donated the land for the ballpark, which is located on Tracy Boulevard near Grantline Road. Alternatively, and perhaps more appropriately, Fabian and Grunauer, two of Tracy’s early merchants who operated a dry goods store where the new facility is to be construct; “Fabian Grunauer Station.”

It may be appropriate to pay tribute to all three men. The Tracy Ballpark could be named after Mr. Ritter and the new station after Mr. Fabian and Mr. Grunauer.

Respectfully Submitted;
