Tracy wins the first round of the tennis playoffs.

Tracy High’s tennis team will host the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs Wednesday after the Bulldogs defeated the team from Beyer High today in the first round of the championship tournament.

Tracy won the match 8-1, which means it will face the winner of a match between Armijo High and Franklin High of Elk Grove. The second-round match will be at Tracy High at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

West High also hosted tennis playoff action today and fell just short of a second-round berth as the team from Turlock High won 5-4.

In Tracy’s singles matches, Neil Thakor, who is the San Joaquin Athletic Association league champion, remained undefeated this year with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Beyer’s Doug Azevedo. Quinn O’Brien, who was second at the league championship after Thakor, won his matches against Mike Gryskiewiez, 6-4, 6-1.

Tracy won three of its other singles matches as John Trinidad beat Nate Bybee, 6-1, 6-3; Chris Pope beat Frank Loaliza, 7-5, 6-3; and Miguel Gonzalez beat Max Jarvis, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. Tracy’s Mitchell Adams lost in three sets to Chris Lee, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6.

In doubles, Tracy’s Cameron Mercurio and Niraj Punjya beat David Diehra and Anthony Nunez, 6-1, 6-2; Vatsal Jhalani and Sanjit Gill beat John Miller and Thomas Miller, 6-3, 6-2; and Kevin Camacho and Ryan Kelly beat Kenneth Gloena and Godan Zho, 6-2, 6-3.

In West’s matchup against Turlock High, the Wolf Pack’s top two players lost in three sets each. The only West singles player to win his match was Parker Lewis, while all three of West’s doubles teams won.

Brett Spadoni, champion of the Tri-City Athletic League in individual play, lost to Turlock’s Mike Simms, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6. West coach Micheal Quintana said the hardest-fought match was between the No. 2 players, who went down to a close tie-breaker set. Kevin Canoy lost to Anders Skooglund, 1-6, 6-4, 5-7.

In other singles matches, West’s Jay Modi lost to Kevin King, 0-6, 1-6; Lewis beat Spenser Stevens, 6-4, 6-3; West’s Baljit Singh lost to Nathan Potter, 4-6, 1-6; and West’s Gilbert Munoz lost to Kevin Kumimoto, 7-6, 6-7, 1-6.

In doubles, David de la Cruz and Serggio Antonio beat their Turlock opponents, 6-4, 6-2; Luke Creasman and Jerome Oribello beat Keith Waterman and Amarseen Mikael, 6-4, 6-1; and D.J. Coleto and Noel Antonio beat their opponents, 6-1, 6-2.
