West and Tracy high gymnasts give strong showings.

West High’s Pia Valdes took fifth place overall and gymnasts from Tracy High’s junior varsity gymnasts finished in second place as a team in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finals Friday, hosted by Half Moon Bay High School at Gymtowne in Moss Beach.

Gymnasts from Tracy and West compete in the Santa Clara league, because there are too few teams in the area. West had three girls in the meet, and Tracy had eight. There were 54 competitors at Friday’s meet.

Valdes scored 35.850 all-around for her fifth-place finish. Tracy’s Desiree Drab was seventh all-around with a score of 35.450.

Other gymnasts at the meet were Lindsey Phelps, Tracy, 11th, 34.350; Kristin Barrios, Tracy, 15th, 33.600; Shellie Gottberg, Tracy, 16th, 32.850; Hannah Garrity, Tracy, 18th, 32.250; Marianne Fessel, West, 19th, 31.850, Samantha Warren, Tracy, 20th, 31.550; Olivia Dale, West, 21st, 31.300; Katie Lo, Tracy, 24th, 28.650; and Sara Zanolli, Tracy, 25th, 26.800.

In the team totals, Lowell High School was first with 179.900 points, followed by Tracy, 169.600; Gunn High, 159.850; Burlingame High, 156.350; Mercy High, 114.950; West, 99.000 and Half Moon Bay, 87.400.

The varsity league finals begin at 6 p.m. today at Gymtowne in San Bruno, and top finishers from that meet will move on to the Central Coast Section meet at the same gym May 15.
