![]() Denzell Hines. Photo contributed After an evening of video games, Denzell Hines and his friend skateboarded along Schulte Road on their way to Denzell’s home at about 10:30 p.m. A Scion driven by John Holland, 19, of Tracy, slammed into Denzell, who had crossed into the intersection at Corral Hollow Road, witnesses told police. An ambulance took Denzell to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about a half-hour later. Denzell and his friend may have crossed the street on a red light, according to Lt. Jeremy Watney. A witness who declined to give her name said Holland wasn’t speeding. She was driving near Holland’s Scion and a few other cars when they approached the green light. She said traffic stopped suddenly. Denzell’s body flew at least 30 yards, she said. “The driver wasn’t speeding and he wasn’t driving erratically,” she said Monday. “He’s not a murderer.” She said Holland didn’t approach Denzell after the crash and appeared in shock. A blood sample from Holland will come back sometime this week. Watney said the man didn’t appear to have been drinking. It could take Tracy Police Department’s traffic at least two weeks to finish the investigation, Watney said. Denzell was a sociable teen who played the piano and was known by a black leather jacket he always wore, no matter what the temperature was like outside. “He was always trying to make someone smile,” said 16-year-old Arsema Asghedom, a friend of Denzell. He was a sophomore at Harmony One, a county-run continuation school in Tracy. He previously attended West High School. His father, David Hines Sr., works as a fire captain in Oakland. His mother is Kelly Hines and his brothers are Dominique Hines and David Hines Jr. The family moved from Hercules to Tracy four years ago. •We want to hear what you have to say. While you are right that pedestrians have the right of way, it is the responsibility of the pedestrian to follow the rules of the road as well. Sometimes accidents happen.... it does not appear that the driver did anything wrong though we will know more when the toxicology report comes back. Even if the child did the wrong thing and crossed the road on a red light, it is still a tragedy with a life cut short. My condolences to the family- he sounds like he was a nice boy.

Formabruh, If you can read you should reread the blogs, all Crystal said was that the Scion was not speeding and it had the green light, just as many other witnesses to the accident have said. There are a lot of ways police investigate accidents such as intersection cameras and event recorders in new car computers. It just seems that Denzell made a mistake for one reason or another just like we all have, but this time the results were fatal. RIP Denzell

my prayers go out to the family of Denzell, also to his friends that were his extended family. To the young man who was with him and to all those who now grieve him. You are strong wonderful people who I have watched today show remarkable strength and while you may have made a few poor choices you quickly fliped them around and remembered the right way to deal with something. Now is not the time, nor will it ever be our place to say why God made the call to bring Denzell home to him, but know this, since it has happened you will become stronger for it. and one day you will do great things with that power. Please stay strong and postive, support eachother in this time of need, and I will do my best to support you all.

This is a tragic situation. I really think that two lives have been lost here Denzell's and the driver that Killed him. Imagine what this 19yr old has to deal with for the rest of his life. It's tragic for both parties and families. However, it really happened and whom ever made the mistake it does not bring this beautiful young man back to his family and friends. My son attends West High and knew him well. I had the privelage Saturday to bring flowers and spend a little time with his friends and family, My love and prayers are with all of you and may God give you the strength to get you though this difficult time.

My condolences to Denzell's family and friends. My child is 15 and I can not imagine the pain that you must feel. My sincere condolences to all of you. Please young people always be careful and be aware of your surroundings. When you encounter intersections watch for others. Drivers have to do the same. This is a horrible accident, but please don't let this tragedy go on without a lesson. I can't say it enough. My sincere condolences.

What a tragedy. I dont blame any one involved in this accident, but I have one question, where are the parents ??? Im so sick of seeing young kids out roaming the streets at nights.
Votes: +7
If any one wants to blame any one, lets talk to some of these parents let there kids out roaming the streets at all hours of the night. Tracy needs to start a curfew for minors and enforce it, ticket the no good parents, and give the good ones a warning. My question is did the parents know that he was out roaming the streets at that time at night ?? I have almost hit a kid last week that walked out in front of me agaist a red light, I told the kid how stupid he was and he had no concern to what had just happened. life can end in a second, why let your kids roam the streets and possibly get killed, be a parent and take responsibility for your children, my kids would never be out skate boarding at 10:30 at night. report abuse

formabruh I know you are upset, but think you need to reread what Crystal stated. She didn't say anything about games, that was blogger "dae". I could get pissy with you about your messed up facts, but will try to sympathize with your pain. The police are doing their investigations & will be done soon. Give them a chance. I think you will be surprised. Another thing, when you as a pedestrian cross at a cross walk at an intersection, you too have to obey the law & cross on a green light. You do not have the right to jump out into the cross walk at a whim. Please stop trying to hate & respect your friend by doing the hardest thing to do, forgive. There were more than One victim in this whole mess. Put yourself in the Scion. Nobody can stop a car on a dime when traveling 40mph, nobody! Bri nd kk Were YOU there? How can you say it was easy to see someone riding a skateboard in black at 10:30pm? Your not God , Don't judge & stop humiliating yourself by nonsense comments. "Johnny Boy" is an awesome person, NOT a wreckless driving murderer. He always drives slow, doesn't even listen to the radio. This couldn't have happened to a nicer person. God bless all of you & try to find some peace, not hate. Turn this around to do some good. Influence your younger siblings. report abuse

His mother is a family friend and a wonderful mother! He was on his way home not roaming the streets. Not doing drugs, drinking & driving or anything else that so many other 16 yrs olds in and around Tracy get into these days. This is a tragic accident and there is no room for second guessing a grieving mother. My condolensces to his family and to all those friends of his who are learning to deal with loss at such a young age.

Bri nd KK no one was playing dodge the cars. the driver simply did not see him. I hate to say but accidents do happen. The police are conducting a thorough investigation, and the conclusion will be determined soon. formabruh no need to point fingers. you are obviously angry at the situation that has been apprehended. But, when the light is red and the hand on the meter is lit, you do not have the right to cross. That is why they invented such a thing. If there was an oncoming car, he should have been more cautious. Once again, this is extremely sad what has happened. But, like i said before accidents do happen. Don't blame anyone for anything, there is one side who is grieving tremendously. And on the other side, the scion driver is going to have to live with this forever. And it will haunt him forever. Once again, my prayers go out to Denzell's family and friends. RIP Denzell report abuse

For all you people who think that the driver was speeding because Denzell "flew so far".. You're wrong. It does not take much speed to critically hurt someone with a vehicle. When I was 16 years old and driving to school a man ran out from between 2 cars into the street and I hit him going only 20 mph. hew flew up and over the front of my car and landed about 10-15 feet. I WAS ONLY GOING 20MPH!!! So do not tell me that the driver was speeding simply because you think the victim "flew so far". Learn your physics and wait for the police report. My prayers go out to both families and all invloved with this tragedy.

A car doesnt have to be speeding to throw a person 35 yards, and yes the parents shouldve never let their kid be out skateboarding at 10:30 at night. If you think its ok for a child to be out that late living life to his fullest your crazy, pull your head out of you rear. I feel so sorry for both families and my heart goes out to John, he has to live with the fact he killed some one for their negligence. The fact still remains, if parents would keep track of their kids and not let them be out that late at night, this would've never happened. report abuse

I have to disagree with the people who think that 10:30 on a Friday night is too late for a 16 year old. I am a pretty strict parent myself and do my best to know where my kids are at all times. My teenagers curfew on a weekend is about 10 or maybe 11pm. But I have to know where he is, doing what and with whom or he simply stays home. Us parents all check with each other to make sure the kids are doing what they say the are doing. As they go from place to place they check in and we check up on them. They are not allowed to run around town. Though we cannot 100% know everything, we do our best. We just hope they make good choices while they are not under our direct supervision. Though I usually make sure my kids get a ride from a parent when coming home late, I do not think it was too much out of the question for Denzell and his friend to ride their skateboards home. It does not sound like they were carousing around town. Just a skateboard ride home that unfortunately ended in tragedy. Everyone needs to stop second guessing, placing blame and move on to healing and sending your good thoughts and prayers to the families.

Sad, sad, sad. Living life to it's fullest doesn't mean taking unnecssary chances. From the facts it looks like Denzell may have crossed on a red light, and the driver didn't see him. Perhaps he couldn't avoid the accident even if he had. The facts don't really matter because one child has been killed, and another will have regrets for life. I wouldn't want my son, no matter what age, skateboarding at 10:30 p.m. on a busy street. But that's all hindsight. A different lesson can be learned by all. It's just too bad that Denzell will not be given a second chance. You see this in motorcycle and pedestrian accidents as well. God bless the families of both children, and "Be careful out there."

XOXO It sounds like you need a lesson in physics. When an object(Denzell) is in motion and makes contact with another object(John's car) in motion the distance of travel after impact is increased. Denzell was on his skateboard trying to catch up to his friend who had already made it to the other side of the road. John was traveling 40mph, which on it's own is fast. They collided & that caused Denzell to be launched. Hit a baseball off of a stick, then have someone pitch it to you. You'll see the difference. Stop trying to find fault in everybody ,but the obvious. Denzell acted carelessly, rest his sole. He is a kid and kids sometimes feel like nothing will ever hurt them. They tend to be careless, because they think everyone else is aware of them. Well, at 10:30 at night on a heavily tree lined street, a blue, yellow, black or white person on a skateboard with dark clothing jumps out in front of a car in the right lane that has cars traveling on it's left is going to get hit. Bottom line. Let's not blame the parents either, the boy was 16, Driving age. These poor people need our prayers. They need to wake up daily with a deep void that will never be filled. John's family will wake up with a dagger that will never dull. Let them all be!

This is truly an unfortunate event, but the teens that are on skateboards-bikes-scooters and even walking late at nite should also be aware of traffic and they also need to have the COMMON SENSE of wearing light color clothes or some sort of reflective gear at night-(THIS INCLUDES SOME OF YOU NIGHT WALKERS).Many times I have been comming home late and have had to slam on my breaks due to kids flying into the streets and having no thought that a 2000 lb vehicle CANNOT stop on a dime.

Everyday we tell our children to watch and be aware of their surroundings - if they are walking or driving. But accidents happen. I am always amazed at how many people are out walking at night in dark colored clothes. As a pedestrian you are the least protected. It is sad that something bad has to happen so that others may learn a lesson. Teach your children that drivers can't always see them. (Ever driven through a school zone at the 5 minutes before the start of school)the sun is shining in the driver's eyes! I am very sorry for both Families. My son knows the brothers of both of the boys and is heartbroken that both families are suffering - but what it is really upsetting right now is that the driver's brother is being harrassed and threatened at school - and it is not by the the Hines family but by others that probably didn't even know Denzell. Isn't there enough pain to both families! Too many people using their personal anger to take revenge - where none is due.

shoulda lean sister, if you remember right MANY people were calling for Brett to sent to jail. It was Mike Uccis' dad that went to court and asked the judge to go easy on Brett. We can all learn from Mikes dad. We all need to wait for the police to make the facts public. Until then we don't know all the facts. As for the people that say 10:30 is late, Denzell was headed home, not to late for a 16year old. And to those who say John was speeding, I know John and I really doubt it. He was also headed home and he has the reputation of being a kind of "grandma driver". So lets just wait for the facts, forgive if necessary and just make Tracy a place we are all glad to call home.

All of John's friends and/or supporters need to step back and say "Hey, I don't know all of the facts so I'm not going to be pointing fingers." The friend that was there that night knows all or most of the facts. He has probably told some of his friends what went down. And those friends told others, and those others told others. But have you ever played that game where you whisper something into a person's ear, then they whisper it into the next and so forth, and then when you are at the end of the line you ask the last person what they heard and 90% of the time it is almost different from what the first person told the second person? It's because people don't remember facts or leave things out. I just want the finger pointing and blame to stop. These post are annonomys so we don't know who is being real and who's not. There are hurtful people out there that like to stir up stuff and maybe one person is just doing it to get a rise. I just want everyone to take a step back, DO NOT compare it to other tragedies, and just focus on the big picture: Remembering Denzell for his good qualities and the good times had. When you compare this to other tragedies in Tracy that is so disrespectful because each tragedy is different. All are different circumstances and once again you don't know what really happened in them because you weren't there. You weren't the judge, you weren't the victim's sister or brother or mother or father, you weren't the suspects father, mother, brother, sister, or anything. I just want everyone to step back and remember that when blogging on stories where a death occurs is should be to rememeber that person, not place blame on the victim or on the assaulter. Please respect Denzell and stop fighting.

Yeah its sad that Denzell died blah blah blah, I'm curious about the toxicology report on him. I knew him from a class I had with him before he was chucked out of West High. He was incredibly rude, and seemed to be intoxicated more often than not, he had no compassion for anyone and was incredibly racist to anyone who wasn't black. And for the record, the driver's brother has seen nothing but abuse at West High, a tragedy in itself. How idiotic can you get when you talk about being smart and compassionate when you go out and take everything out on someone who had absolutely nothing to do with this in the first place. Accept responsibility and move on, it only goes to show how immature some ppl get when all they can do is spread hate when they are trying to show some love.

OMFG... you calm down. And for the record, the driver's brother had to leave school because of all the heat he was taking. Oh and for the record, he acted that way towards everyone, not just myself. And I honestly doubt, because of how intoxicated he ALWAYS was, that he could whip me in any sort of confrontation, left alone anyone else who is sober and has an ounce of intelligence. By the way, do you like how I don't have to swear to get you so incredibly upset because you know I'm right in the first place. I'll give you this however, it is noble to defend your bud through thick and thin, but to be completely ignornant OF TRUE FACT is rediculous. Answer me this, why was he kicked out of West High?

PS: If you try to pull out the racist card on me, please spare us and others the agony of it all. I've heard it so many times from minorities trying to get out of anything that happens that its worn thin to the point where nobody cares anymore. PEACE. PSS: I too happen to be a minority. report abuse

OMFG-That ISbeing racist! I am a black mother of 2 teens. I moved my family here to get away from the bay area BS. I have worked my a off to give them a better life. It saddens me to here so much garbage when we are all grieving. Everybody needs to back off & start healing. Cry for your lost brother, be upset, maybe angry, this is all normal. Please learn & grow from it. Don't judge move on.

Racism exists yes. It's dumb but it's there. But you must remember, there is more than one kind of racism out there, not just White being racist to groupA or groupB. Maybe you should open your eyes to all the ridicule other ppl get from all walks of life. I can't stand it when people always say white people are all racists and no other group is when ppl every day walk around calling white people crackers, pastefaces, whitewashes, white boys whatever. I suppose that isn't racist?

lolsup: you need to stop talking about people you obviously didn't know, i'm white and denzell called me his white girl. it didn't matter if you were mexican white or black, and yeah he's gon be rude to people he don't know, aren't we all kinda what if status around people we never met, once you actually got to know him you'd know he aint really like that and he was hella sweet and if you ever needed anything he'd help you out with it, and who cares if he had a little fun now and then you act like he was the only kid out there who does that, let him live up his life, and just cuz you OBVIOUSLY don't got a life that doesnt mean you gotta be hating on someone who actually did. don't be jealous. |
it ain't the same with out you. REST IN PARADISE
