Pitcher takes share of top spot in Tracy High record books.
It’s taken a while for Bret Maddox to get used to the idea
that he could hold a school record.
On Wednesday, the Tracy High senior pitched five scoreless
innings against the Lodi Flames as the Bulldog batters overcame a 2-0 deficit
to take the 4-2 win. Maddox, one of Tracy’s
regular relievers, gets credit for the win, his ninth of the season. He now
shares the top spot in the Tracy High record books with Danny Auchard, who
pitched for nine wins in 1988, for most single-season wins.
Maddox said he used to think those kinds of records were
only for starting pitchers.
“I was surprised I would reach eight this year,” he said. “I
thought I’d just come in and mop up like last year.”
As junior Maddox didn’t start in any games, and he was
credited with one win and one loss. He has started in five games this year, but
more often comes in when starting pitchers begin to struggle.
His win Wednesday also makes Maddox the leader of the San
Joaquin Athletic Association in wins this season, and his 2.528 earned run
average is the fourth-lowest in the league. First is fellow Tracy reliever Kyle Moses, who has given up
no earned runs this year.
Maddox got a share of the record after pitching 36 innings
for the Bulldogs this year. Starting pitcher Daniel Heefner, ERA 2.697, has the
most innings pitched at 36.1. Auchard pitched 68.3 innings to get his record.
Head coach Vic Alkire said that at this point in the season
the team knows where each of the seven pitchers on the team will do well.
Maddox is the one the coaches call on relatively early in the game if the
starter has given up too many walks or runs.
“Maddox is always going to be there in that role,” Alkire
said. “That’s where he’s good.”
When asked about his role as one of the team’s reliable
relievers, Maddox won’t claim too much of the credit for wins like Wednesday’s.
“I give all credit to the defense,” he said. “I’m not out
there by myself, and everyone hits when I’m pitching.”
