The Wolf Pack hopes a nonleague win will give it the edge going into a tough two-week stretch and playoff push. The West High varsity baseball team needed a big inning Saturday at Logan High in Union City, and it finally got it in the sixth as the Wolf Pack took advantage of a couple of walks and got some timely base hits to come from behind for a 3-2 nonleague win. Derek Oetken pitched three scoreless innings, but Logan got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a string of base hits and two runs. West started the sixth inning when Riley Goulding and Matt Fontaine both drawing walks. Tyler Shepherd got a base hit to drive in Goulding and Jordan Devencenzi, a freshman who just came up to the varsity team, got a base hit to load the bases. With two out Oetken came up and hit a two-run single to put West in the lead. Relief pitchers C.J. Parilla and Ryan Devencenzi kept Logan scoreless for the final two innings to seal the victory for West. The win puts West at 16-7 overall, and the Pack has a 6-0 record in the Tri-City Athletic League going into its last four games of the season, two this week against Tokay of Lodi and twice against St. Mary’s of Stockton next week. The three teams are vying for two spots in the Sac-Joaquin Section South playoffs, which begin May 14. "This is probably our biggest week of the season," head coach Jim Rice said. Both West and St. Mary’s are 6-0 in the Tri-City Athletic League, and Tokay’s two losses were last week to St. Mary’s. "We definitely have our hands full with either one of them," Rice said.
(S) Logan 8, West 4 The sophomore team from Logan High started off with four runs in the first inning and four more in the second in a nonleague match. Logan managed six hits off West starting pitcher Jesse Hernandez, but errors in the field also contributed to the Logan rallies. West’s batters got a couple big hits, including doubles from Taylor Kruger, Jacob Lopez and Caleb Creasman. Marcus Pedrosa hit a triple, and Jonathan Townsend and Lopez drove in runs for the Wolf Pack. West is now 14-9 overall and 6-0 in TCAL
(F) St. Mary’s 6, West 1 The West freshmen were on their way to a close game against St. Mary’s at home Monday, but couldn’t hold back the Rams for long. "The first two innings we had real good defense, but in the top of the third we fell apart," coach Vince Vargas said. "We made four errors, and they scored four runs." The only hit for West came from Joey Wagner, while West’s single run came after D.J. Watson walked, stole second and third, and scored on a grounder to short by Chris Del Dotto. West is 5-14 for the season.
