A women's tennis team from a local health club beat out some tough Central Valley competition.

In-Shape Sports Club’s women’s tennis team finished its seven-month season in first place in the Central Valley Tennis League.

The Tracy A Red team, with its win April 22 against the West Lane A team from the Stockton In-Shape club, finished its season with a 21-1 record, just ahead of the Oak Park A team, 20-2, the only team to beat the Tracy players, and that was during a game way back in March.

“We were undefeated in the first half of the season, and we felt pretty good about that,” Tracy team captain Patty Cole said, adding that it’s the first time the local team has taken first place. “It’s tough competition. It’s a good league.”

Three of Tracy’s players finished among the top 15 in the league in winning percentage in the 12-team A league. Lori Wehrli was undefeated in 15 matches, Patti Guzman was 20-1 and Serena Reinin was 19-1.

Cole said that all competition is in doubles play, and each league meeting includes five doubles matches.

In last week’s matchup against West Lane at In-Shape on Tracy Boulevard, Tracy’s Desiree Bozek and Kendall George lost, 6-0, to West Lane’s Marianne Boyce and Therese McCarthy; Tracy’s Guzman and Reinin beat Gayle Miyasaki and Janice Yamada, 6-1, 6-0; Tracy’s Mischelle Fleisch and Wehrli beat Tonya Duval and Lisa Hanson, 6-0, 6-4; Tracy’s Carolyn Genest and Mary Ann Brenkwitz beat Grace Atwater and Connie Rishwain, 6-3, 6-0; and Cole and Kay C. Denholm beat Julie Rule and Becky Ivary, 6-2, 6-0.
