Snippets from editorials around the country this week.

“The vote goes on” from Thursday’s Newsday:

“The case for Hillary Rodham Clinton to fight on for the Democratic presidential nomination grew stronger after her double-digit win in Pennsylvania. But there was never much reason for her to abandon the race before every primary vote is cast. This is a democracy. Voting is what we do. It’s often a messy way to choose a leader. But it’s the best way.”

“Police officers’ salaries are public” from Monday’s Bakersfield Californian:

“Taxpayers must be able to monitor public institutions and agencies, including police departments, to guard against excessive pay, overtime abuse, nepotism, gender and race discrimination, among other things. Keeping public records public is one of the best ways to guard against that.”

“Bush tries again to thwart greenhouse gas law” from Thursday’s Sacramento Bee:

“Even as evidence mounts of global warming’s harmful impacts on the planet, the auto industry with help from the Bush administration continues to oppose reasonable efforts to reduce their products’ damaging effect on the environment. It seems to be a stupid and futile exercise, one that will end only when the Bush administration is no longer in office.”

“Who’ll cover the checks?” from Friday’s Washington Post:

“The Democratic presidential candidates have some big plans — with big price tags attached. By our calculations, using figures supplied by the campaigns, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has proposed new spending and tax breaks that would amount to almost $265 billion a year when fully implemented, while the initiatives proposed by Sen. Barack Obama total nearly $333 billion. Those initiatives, which would be phased in over time and which the candidates say they have identified ways of funding, don’t include billions of dollars more in one-time spending.”

“Shake up the VA” from Friday’s Seattle Times:

“Once again, the Department of Veterans Affairs is out of sync with the needs of returning soldiers. The disconnect is especially daunting for those who have attempted suicide because of post-traumatic stress syndrome or other mental-health issues. Sen. Patty Murray of Washington calls for the resignation of Dr. Ira Katz, who is in charge of mental-health issues for the Veterans Health Administration. She is right to do so. Internal e-mails reveal a combination of bad faith and incompetence in calculating how widespread the suicide problem is among veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and even from Vietnam.”
