‘Deplorable’ athletic facilities Print E-mail

Tracy High parent writes about something she says has been forgotten at the school.

EDITOR,

I am a parent who spoke at the Tracy school board meeting Tuesday night. Parents, students and teachers addressed the board regarding the decaying and deplorable conditions of the Tracy High athletic facilities.
I applaud the board for approving the two new classroom buildings at Tracy High. However, the conditions of the athletic facilities can no longer be brushed aside.

The board was also addressed regarding these same conditions in 2005. At the time, we were told to go out and help get Measure E passed so there would be funds available to fix these problems. Measure E successfully passed in 2006, and our facilities are in the same or worse condition now as they were in 2005.

The “we’ll get to it in the future” attitude of the board needs to change. As a parent and taxpayer, I was offended by Trustee Gregg Crandall’s comments that the school board meeting was not the proper forum to address these issues. What is the proper forum? The state Department of Education? The Department of Public Health? A courtroom?

We waited patiently while West High received its much-needed athletic facilities. We will no longer sit quietly while waiting for the board get around to Tracy High. The health and safety of every kid, teacher and visitor to our facilities are at risk. That should be reason enough to act now!

Sounds like the school board is turning this upside-down. They think it is ok to discuss Measure E, but not to discuss their school government. They should just do their jobs - like they are getting paid to do; or go work at wallymart.

Since I moved here 17 yrs ago Tracy High has always been given a backseat by the school board. There is always something else that has to be taken care of. When West High was built it seemed, then, that repairs at THS would begin. No chance. It is apparent that THS is the blacksheep of TUSD. If THS gets some perks they West High also has to get something. The students at THS need new facilities and it's about time the school board voted to have it done but not without giving West High something in exchange. Doesn't seem fair, does it?

I had no idea how bad the problem was. I agree with Laura, and I think she should run for School Board.

In building new THS and now approving additional buildings I cannot applaud the school board for getting this done. They're a day late and a dollar short in my opinion. THS should have been repaired or replaced a long time ago. TUSD admin sat on their butts when it came to anything being done for THS but they stood up and applauded for anything West wanted. Measure E passed (this time) because folks on the west side of the city wouldn't vote to pass anything related to THS unless West got something in the package. What a crock of crap. It's about time effen time someone stood up and exposed the school board for what they really are.
