Minimums for middles Print E-mail

A student suggests a change of schedule for Tracy's middle grades.

EDITOR,

Middle schools should be exposed to the idea of having a minimum day every week. Tracy High does it, and so should we. But instead of Mondays, we should have it on Thursdays.

Thursday is a good day to get out of school early, because Friday is a day that most teachers like to schedule pop quizzes and unit tests and make reports or projects due.

If we get out at 1 p.m. Thursdays, we can study for those assessments and, therefore, ace them. The extra two hours can also allow those students who have busy lives or like to do things at the last minute to cram their projects or reports.

Minimum days are an advantage not only for students, but for the teachers as well, because they can take this time to grade the work we did the past four days. Therefore, we will receive our corrected work back on Friday and have time to analyze it to see our current progress that week. So if you failed on a pop quiz or test, you know ahead of time to work harder next week. Teachers would also get some extra quality time for their social lives.

I hope the district administration considers this for next year.

Aren't you the same kid who wanted to be able to skip ahead to a higher math class? Now you want a minimum day like the high schools? And you would appreciate Thursday as being that day? I'll bet you have piano lessons on that day, don't you? Or maybe Latin language tutoring? Or mathematical statistics advancement classes? Don't think that because you're in middle school that you're losing out on some perks. You'll be in high school before you know it and you'll have your mimimum Monday's.

I thought all the schools in TUSD were out early on Mondays? I know the elementary schools are as well as the high schools.

Middle school is to baby-sit you while your parents are making a living. Nobody in this town wants you roaming the streets, unsupervised, on any afternoon making trouble, stealing booze at 7-11, spraying grafitti on the church, shooting out car windows with bb-guns, smoking pot in the neighborhood park, or any other intellectual activities that amuse you. I wish schools were 8 hours a day, 50 weeks a year, and two weeks of vacation.
