A mother writes about the woes of students stood up by a restaurant.
EDITOR,
I just want to write a brief paragraph about a restaurant where my kids went last weekend for their senior prom.
Even though they had an 8 p.m. reservation, they were left sitting until 9:15 p.m., while the restaurant took walk-ins. I guess the prom kids do not rate as high as higher-tipping adults.
All the manager said to them was, “Sorry,” while their prom night clicked away. Kids had come from as far as Modesto and were going to miss their prom all together.
I guess the almighty adult dollar meant more than service for the customers with reservations. — Linda French, Tracy

OK, but you sort of neglected to name the restaurant and I don't think you can generalize that all restaurants do this. If there's a problem, give details so others can make a decision if they want to patronize the restaurant in question (especially on important evenings) or maybe the manager would have a reply for all to see.

Did the restaurant have a policy of not seating a large group until all attendees were present? Was it a small restaurant where they had to wait for many tables to clear so that they could put tables together for a large party?
If not, then it is a shame that the kids were kept waiting that long. written by Kelly Kemp , April 23, 2008
Every single person in that group needs to go online to that company's website and file a huge complaint and as detailed as possible. If those kids had a reservation, that table should have been prepared and reserved for them and not left sitting. A large group of my family went through this and sat for 2 hours before walking out and going elsewhere. Everyone complained and I promise we received free meals, gift certificates, the works to make it up to our group rather than have us spread the bad word to others.
I hope the group still made the best of it and had a great prom regardless......... written by notnice , April 23, 2008
I think it's a liability issue for the Tracy Press to name the restaurant. If I had to take a guess, the writer probably did mention the restaurant name but it was omitted by the Press. JMHO

The same thing happened to my daughter. Their reservation was at 7:00 so they would have plenty of time to make it to the prom. At 9:00 she called me because she was so upset and I told her to go to another restaurant. It was a Japanese place on Tracy Blvd. Her first big night and it she was so disappointed that her night was ruined.

The restaurant is Musashi on Tracy Blvd. They took walk in patrons ahead of several kids that had reservations. Kids from Modesto & Lodi missed their proms altogether. When I called and spoke to the Manager he admitted they were busy with walk in's. I said what about reservations, all he could say was sorry. I told them he could at least have discounted their dinner, he offered nothing. I did try to report it to the headquarters. They all seem to have individual owners. My daughter and her boyfriend were just 2 people. There were other kids with limos that still hadn't made it out. Like I said they didn't look like big tippers so they just let them sit there, then said "Oh sorry"

That's really bad. The kids should have left without paying.

Well, Linda, this is a capitalist society, therefore, instead of blaming the food joint maybe we should blame society for elevating money over human dignity.

What a hard lesson for these young ones. I don't think it was about tipping tho, they give poor service, They are slow on a slow night. I don't go there anymore.

Boycott not only for their poor service on any given night but that fact that so many people that I know have gotten sick after eating there and wouldn't go back even if it was free anyways.........
written by MamaV , April 24, 2008
How unfortunate for the kids! It can't be the tipping because they charge the kids or anyone for that matter when it's a big party so they would get it regardless! I wish the kids would have just left! Sorry isn't good enough for missing a prom!

A way to rate restaurants and businesses. As well as check out places before you go. I suggest you give Musashi a bad yelp. yahoo! local is a great way to rate businesses as well, but I prefer yelp. written by Linda F , April 24, 2008
Thank you for all the suggestions. These were just two young kids all dressed up for the big dance sitting in a restaurant being ignored as they took adults ahead of them. From what I read I guess I am lucky they did not get food poisoning on top of it all.

I have never eaten there. Been thinking about giving it a try but with all the negative publicity here I'll eat elsewhere.
For newsflash: Eating and running out without paying is not teaching these kids anything. Being young, and not having the "experience", you should have told them to find another place to eat. After waiting 15 mins when you've had reservations it just not acceptable. Waiting hours is just plain inexperience. written by Joe , April 25, 2008
I've not seen a group of high schoolers lately that can act maturely. They were obviously giving respect to their regular and semi-regular customers over a one time group of punks who would act like hoodlums. Come back in 5 years for your college graduation, and maybe, just maybe, could we expect you to act like adults.

Joe, knock it off. This was their night to be mature adults and laugh a lot. Musashi's is an awful restaurant. They should have gone to Strings. yummy Italian food without all the loud Olive Garden noise and great service.
written by lilly , April 25, 2008
Joe the fact that they are high school students has nothing to do with it. Believe it or not some kids are acutally respectful and are raised properly. It sounds like just because you dont know any, you think that all kids are the same. They arn't!! Maybe this restaurant is on the same stupid train of thought as you and needs to check reality and stop being such a jerk!
written by LindaF , April 25, 2008
Joe,
These kids were not in a group, there were other groups there. Everyone in this world deserves dignity and respect, even a jerk like you. If you could read you would have seen there was only two of them. Maybe before you make nasty comments you should check your facts? Possibly you work there and are trying to defend yourself?
