A Sunday Earth Day celebration will take place on the green at Stockton's Victory Park.
Earth Day is Tuesday, and Stockton will kick off the week with its 20th annual Earth Day Festival on Sunday. About 10,000 people are expected to crowd Victory Park to enjoy the outdoors and learn ways to preserve the environment. Through funky music, vegetarian dishes and educational booths, festival-goers will learn simple ways to live green. "The goal for the past 20 years of the festival has been to make sure we encourage people to take care of our planet," festival spokesman Martin Saltzman said. "People want to know how to make a difference to make the planet healthier and festivals like this make more people aware." A 1.5-mile bike ride and parade from the Smith Canal will kick off the all-day festival. The riders dressed in the best earth-friendly garb will win prizes. The sounds of Akimbo, a band out of Davis that incorporates unusual instruments and genres, will headline the day’s earth-friendly lineup. Peace and Justice Network of San Joaquin County launched the first Earth Day Festival. Each year, they partner up with University of the Pacific, San Joaquin County and city of Stockton to throw one of the city’s most attended festivals.
