Wal-Mart has a backer Print E-mail

A letter writer supports a proposed supercenter, saying it promises an economic boost for Tracy.

EDITOR,

I am looking forward to Wal-Mart’s proposed expansion. A supercenter will help Tracy through these difficult economic times. Hundreds of new jobs will be created by the Wal-Mart expansion, and the majority would go to Tracy residents.

Between the new jobs and the hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional sales tax revenue, the expansion will be a significant boost for our economy. Additionally, the Tracy Wal-Mart has been an active member of our community. Its support has allowed numerous organizations to serve Tracy better.

Wal-Mart’s proposed expansion would better serve our needs by remodeling the store and adding grocery sales, which will provide a one-stop shopping location for Tracy residents. I welcome a supercenter in Tracy and all the economic benefits it will bring to our community.

I agree, Carla. People complain about Walmart products being made in China, but the actual store here employs local people. Most products the middle class people can buy are made in another country, including China. Most stores around the Valley have products made outside of the United States. It's not just Walmart that is shaving costs.
I previously lived in a town that had a super Walmart. It is really great to have one-stop shopping. The super Walmart's have hair salons, banks, and many other features besides groceries. They also have a larger selection of items that our local Walmart carries.
I would love to see some companies move to Tracy so we could have more local employment. It would be nice to see the City of Tracy and San Joaquin County offer some incentives to companies to move here. It would be a win-win since more employers means more jobs and more local tax dollars. It would also mean much less commute time and much more quality family time.
Thanks for bringing up the topic, Carla.

WinCo is coming to Tracy. We don't need a Super Wal-Mart. The majority of Wal-Mart jobs are not full-time, so health benefits are not covered by Wal-Mart. And full-time employees who qualify for health benefits pay a larger portion of the premium than employees at other companies. That is how Wal-Mart 'shaves' costs.

San Joaquin County has an organization that has been operating for over 20 years trying to attract high tech and high paying jobs to Tracy. These types of companies require a highly educated and high skilled work force and excellent schools. A Super Wal-Mart does not attract such companies.

It will be great to have a store like Super Walmart, that way the MONOPOLIZER SAVE MART with four or five stores in Tracy, would have a real competitor with real honest prices...
Thanks WAL MART you are very welcome in Tracy

If anyone has recently been up to the Roseville/Rocklin area you can see that free enterprise is alive and well. If Tracy is trying to increase its tax base it should take a look at our neighbors up north. This city needs more store selections for shopping, more restaurants for dining, and more places to go for our young adults. There is absolutely nothing to do in this city. There are only a few nice restaurants to go to but how many times a week can you go to the same restaurant? This city needs to change its ways about economic growth.

Tracy is not Roseville/Rocklin (R/R). R/R has a highly educated and highly skilled workforce with many hi-tech jobs. R/R also enjoys a fairly close proximity to Sacramento, a large metropolitan area. People in R/R have disposal incomes.

Tracy has come along way. Tracy has so much more to offer than it did just 10 years ago. More shopping and more restaurants will not come to Tracy unless there are large numbers of people with disposal income in their pockets. It is doubtful that will happen anytime soon. Businesses are looking to see how many people are in Tracy during the day time. 80% of people work outside of Tracy. Too many working people are not in Tracy during the day time. Restaurants have to survive on evening sales. That's not easy.

vqc....I will have to agree with you. In the Roseville/Rocklin area are many large retirement developments. I can see what you are saying when you said that there is a large population with a "disposable income".
