Tracy and West High gymnasts are getting ready to take a shot at a section meet May 15. But first, their league event awaits.
The two teams will have one more meet at Los Altos High School before they head to the May 7 league finals in San Bruno. Varsity coach Jamie Ulloa said that because most Sac-Joaquin Section schools don’t have gymnastics squads, the local girls compete as guest teams in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Those who do well at league finals will have a shot at the Central Coast Section finals May 15. "Right now, our team score is a qualifying score, but we have to get that at league finals," Ulloa said. Results of Tuesday’s meet were not available at press time, but Tracy came off a first-place finish at a four-team meet Friday at Lowell High School in San Francisco. At that meet, Tracy’s varsity team scored a total of 163, and Lowell High took second place with a team score of 139. West High has only one varsity gymnast, Melissa Marsden. Cupertino High School also participated. Tracy’s Jennifer Brawley scored 36.150 for all-around and first-place honors; 8.8 on the vault for second place; 9.0 on the uneven bars for first place; 9.0 on the balance beam for first place; and 9.35 in the floor exercise for first place. Tracy’s Breanna Noriega was second place in the all-around competition with a score of 34.85. She scored 8.85 in the vault for first place; 8.8 on the bars for second place; 8.0 on the beam for fourth place; and 9.2 on the floor for third place. Marsden, from West, was third all-around with a score of 34.75. She scored 8.4 on the vault for third place; 8.5 on the bars for third place; 8.7 on the beam for second place; and 9.15 on the floor for fourth place. Tracy’s Lindsey Lynch was fourth all-around. On the vault, she scored 7.8 for eighth place; on bars 7.1 for fifth place; on beam 7.6 for fifth place; and on the floor 8.55 for fifth place. Adrian Havens of Tracy placed fifth all-around with a score of 30.8; sixth in vault with 8.1; fourth on bars with 7.6; seventh on beam with 7.0; and eighth on floor with 8.1. In the junior varsity portion of the meet, Lowell had the top team total of 172.5, and Tracy was second with 155.05. West High’s Pia Valdes took fifth place all-around with a score of 33.5. That included scores of 8.95 in the vault (11th place); 8.0 in the uneven bars (sixth place); 7.6 in the balance beam (11th place); and 8.95 in the floor exercise (sixth place). Tracy’s JV gymnasts included Lindsey Phelps, who was sixth overall with a score of 32.9; seventh in the beam (7.9); and fifth on the floor (9.05). Desiree Drab was seventh overall at 32.1, and eighth in the vault. West’s Marianne Fessel was eighth overall with a score of 31.4.
