Sidewalk RV not so bad Print E-mail
Written by William R. Miller / For the Tracy Press /

A letter writer points out that heaps of trash in some neighborhoods block walkways worse than his ticketed motor home, which was only there for a night anyway.

EDITOR,

Several months ago, after returning home from a camping trip with my RV, I parked it in front of my home with its two side wheels partly on the sidewalk. This is how you park an RV so it is level and the refrigerator will function.

I’d planned to remove the food and other items the next morning, then put the RV in its parking space. Much to my surprise, I received a ticket for my parking error and a $30 fine, which I paid.

That day, I drove around town and spotted several vehicles with wheels on the curbs and no tickets. I also spotted a motor home parked on the street with people living inside. I reported this to a city councilwoman, and it was eventually moved.

I was reminded of all of this after seeing all the premature junk on the street and on the sidewalks last week. (My RV did not block the sidewalk.)

The way to police this is to fine the owners of the property.

Incidentally, my ticket was written by a motorcycle officer. He must have been bored looking for speeders and figured that I was easy pickings.

Didn't your RV come equipped with "outrigger" to level your RV? Most of them do. You could have parked your RV properly in the street ifo your home and engaged those devices. Most RV owners park their RV's on the sidewalk because they're too lazy to want to hand crank those devices into place. The officer was only doing his job. As I recall, there is a section in the Calif Vehicle Code that prohibits parking on the sidewalk regardless if you're blocking pedestrian traffic or not. Next time park correctly.

All RV owners have a way to level their unit since most campsites are not level and don't have sidewalks to park on either. Rather than using the curb, put your leveling blocks in the gutter and you should have no problem parking short term to unload and clean.
Sorry to say, I agree with the officer and you should not park on the sidewalk. Not the biggest offense out there, but still wrong.

So let me get this right: you think everybody else should be dealt with (and you even talked with a council woman about it), but your mistake should be overlooked. Do I have this right?

I don't think you approached the councilwoman correctly. What you have to do to get the attention of the city council is to offer them money, let's say $20m, in exchange for letting you have more home building permits than the other guy. If you would have used this approach when you spoke with the councilwoman she could have probably gotten your citation taken care of.

RV's are to heavy for you to be parking one on it. They can break the cement unless it is specially strengthened cement, sidewalks are not meant for cars nor WV's to be parked on.

Are U 4 Real???

Spend your next thirty dollare a little bit wiser and go rent a storage space for your RV. The money you save on gas by not driving the darn thing will pay for itself.

And stop smoking crack and playing your radio so loud. I am the neighbor who called it in. You deserved it!

Sheesh!!!

Seems it is easier for the officers in town to chase down parked cars and pass out citations rather than get these lil punk red shirts off the streets. Hey look at it this way; they are making money for The Bean Festival. and with all the red shirts its such a colorful city. (dripping with sarcasm for those who cant see that)

Just wondering,
when will they be taking pics
of the cleaned up streets
once the spring clean up is over?
Will anyone be posting those images
or is it more productive
for our town
to broadcast
how we clean up
rather than
after its cleaned up.

Why not take pics of the same places they did last week and post those now? Just as a comparison.
Need to show the good with the bad not all the bad.

Move your RV to the south side and crack their sidewalks. Then call Glenn over to photograph it. Probably will be up on blocks by the morning. Glenn should get really great photos of that one.

Ambulance Chaser, and that would be prize winning photo too. smilies/grin.gif

We have a guy in our neighborhood that use to go for walks everday and now he uses a scooter,(one with a seat). If those inconciderate people park their RV's on the side walk you block him.

Hey, if there is an orange electrical cord going from the RV to the house that is totally illegal and code enforcement will go after them!

Got back at all those illegal RV parkers did ya William. Someone probaby called on you and I wonder if this was the first time you've done it or the umpteenth time. They might be sick of looking at it. I know I would. By the way, boats aren't allowed on the streets either, of course unless your getting ready for a trip. I like the guy thay hooks is boat up to his truck so he can tell the cops he's getting ready to go somewhere.

Yep, it is difficult for the officer to distinguish. And Miller didn't say if the officer chalked his tires or not. So I am left to assume that the officer made his best judgment call. Either that or someone called some other activity in and the officer was letting people know he was in the area (so to speak). I have seen them do that before.

Anyway, if it were me, I wouldn't park my RV or boat there. It may cost less in terms of finances and hassle to just put the darn thing in storage, or on the side yard, if you have one.

Another issue, as we are aware, is an increase in people who are living in the RVs recently. Perhaps if Miller never parked there before like he claims then the neighbors were concerned that someone was living there. And that would be a legitimate concern. Especially if the neighbors don't know you well, or know that you have an RV.

Either way. Park at your own risk. But if it stays there for a few days it gets called in (neighborhood rules!?).

Another issue is that this could have been bad timing for Miller. There is a huge traffic demand because of "trash pickers" who are driving around neighborhoods. The sharp increase of TPD calls puts the police on yellow alert.

I do take exception to the author's claim that a motorcycle had anything to do with it. Sounds opinionated to me. By the way don't some RV'rs strap a motorcycle to the back of their RV. I guess Miller thinks police shouldn't save gas. Not sure why that was added.

And I can see your point about people blocking the sidewalks with their vehicles. I know that in my neighborhood children have scraped cars with the bicycles. But who's at fault? Some child trying to squeeze through? Or an adult who doesn't recognize that is the safest place for an adolescent on a bicycle?

Just hope people learn from your experience, William. smilies/wink.gif

Ambulance Chaser, I'm pretty sure the tires do not have to be chalked if they or any vehicle is on the sidewalk. They are not made for any heavy vehicles.

maybenotdumBcomment,

Now that I think of it, your absolutely right. How silly of me. I reverted. I'm just a city slicker, from the big city (how embarrassing). They don't chalk tires here in the residential areas.

You know the banana was wrong about you. You do make some good comments. I don't know how a perennial candidate could produce such yellow journalism. But he got you all wrong. He'll probably give me heck for that comment, but if the shoe fits...
smilies/wink.gif

I have to agree they wouldn't have to chalk in a residential with an RV parked on the sidewalk. If it is on the sidwalk they can ticket. Right on!
