Quick hits

• It was one of those typical questions from a reporter gaggle on Capitol Hill: Does Sen. Harry Reid think the protracted nomination fight between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will harm the party? Reid didn’t miss a beat. “It makes me bitter,” he deadpanned.

• Maria Shriver has written a slim new book called “Just Who Will You Be?” in which she discusses her transition from journalist to the wife of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Numbers

22: Percentage of applicants admitted to UC Berkeley and UCLA this year, down from 24.7 percent at Berkeley and 23.6 percent at UCLA last year.

60,000: Number of Californians admitted as freshmen to the nine University of California schools, 10,000 more than were admitted three years ago.
